The FCC has no control over what you do or say on non-broadcast channels. Cable networks can air whatever they please, but they have to answer to their advertisers and so they tend to keep things clean. They do tend to only air that kind of stuff after 9pm though (a big reason “Louie” is on so late, 11P EST, on FX… They’re more lax w/ the censorship at that hour.) Obviously, A&E isn’t worried about losing ad revenue with an occasional “Shit.” FX used it more than once on “The Shield” as well. Comedy Central airs completely uncensored movies at midnight or 1AM occasionally, with all of the language and sometimes nudity left intact.
Well, at the end Peggy kicked Duck out on the street, just like Duck let Chauncey go! She probably had a word with security & made sure SCDP’s door was locked when she came back upstairs.
According to Vince Gilligan, who runs the show Breaking Bad, AMC lets them say “shit” four times during the season. It lets them say “fuck” with sound dropped only once per season.
Also, does anyone else think that Don was lied to about Anna’s illness? It’s seems too flashy for Mad Men, but Anna’s niece did conveniently come up with excuses for why Don shouldn’t fly to California and why Don should keep paying for the house. Sounds a little fishy to me.
Loved this one, loved the last two after what I thought was a slow start.
I think the questions popping about Peggy being “pretty” are somewhat related to the shot with Don in her lap falling asleep. Did a perfect job of lighting and makeup to the point the Peggy hit a proverbial ‘good side’ (I agree with the “hollywood-ugly” statement above, by the way, easily a very attractive woman), and Don just looked his stretched-and-bloated worst. Intentional, and really contrasted perfectly.
Why do we find that attractive? And, though I’m not a Peggy person, this episode had me rooting for her immensely.
And how would they stop Anna from potentially contacting Don? Unless Anna was in on the ruse, which seems totally contrary to everything we know about the character. I don’t see this as a possibility.
It wasn’t until this thread that I noticed the “Dr. Lyle Evans” reference.
I assumed the house was paid for but Don wanted to come out and handle selling it as “something to do” after he was told there wouldn’t be funeral arrangements. I get the feeling that the niece was just closer to Anna than to her mother in some ways and legitimately wanted to stay in the home. And that having Don around would just complicate things during a period when there really wasn’t anything for him to “fix”.
I don’t think objectively attractive has any meaning. I find Peggy far, far better looking than Joan, for instance, even though Joan has a far more vivacious & assertive personality. And they both blow Betty out of the water, though they may be in part because Betty is such an unpleasant harridan that I cannot imagine wanting to be in the same room with her.
Just realized that Trudy is the same actress that plays Annie on Community.
Best episode of the season by far. Peggy is really struggling with the concept that she can actually have a career and not have to get married and have kids as so many expect. I think emotionally she knows it, but it is hard to get past the indoctrination of the times.
