Mad-Men: 7.05 "The Runaways" (open spoilers)

Just a shirt in the bathroom.
Cardigan in the aborted meeting.
Looks like a regular suit jacket under his topcoat when he ditches Don instead of working late.
Sports coat in the “pod” meeting with [del]Bowman[/del] Cutler.
Suit coat for the meeting with the tobacco people. (Which would have been a must. Esp. at the Algonquin.)

So still fairly casual walking around the office, in his office and coming in on Saturday.

Anyway, the thought of Stephanie ending up at Altamont in December of 1969, got me thinking of the show’s final timeline and when it might end.

The end of 1969 would be perfect, but they might be running a bit fast at this point and go into 1970 some.

But 1969 was such an interesting year. Not too many notable deaths. Ike’s has been referred to twice. Mary Jo Kopechne’s (July 18) is notable because of the Kennedys.

Some events were notable only in later years. E.g., the Stonewall riots (June 28). The birth of Jack Black.

No mention of the recent Apollo 8 or 9 missions. Apollo 10 will probably be skipped as well. Can’t avoid 11.

Yes! Lou got a wakeup call and put on his armour! :stuck_out_tongue: (My favorite Tom & Lorenzo writing is about Joan. Who knew the roses on her dresses meant so much? And I have been waiting to see if, and how, her wardrobe would be updated for the 60’s. Her figure would not be flattered by Twiggy-ish miniskirts!)

Am I the only one wondering what Harry Crane was doing out in LA? I thought he was based in New York, talking to Cutler about getting a computer.

I thought that he’d been sacked at first because of the unremarked appearance, Roger said he was gone, when Cutler wanted a computer. But nobody seemed to care that Crane was out there, though I imagine that LA featured quite a lot of TV connections, which Harry was involved with…

Harry has been spending time in California on a regular basis for several seasons now, since long before there was a west coast office.

Yeah, there’s been episodes from the last few seasons where Harry comes in, looking all California and talking about the west coast way of doing things. Usually to the bemusement of the New York gang. During Kinsey’s one-episode return, he asks Harry to shop his Star Trek script because he knows that Harry had connections in LA.

Cardigan with his underlings. Suit jacket with his overlords.

Nipclipper - N. A type of conspiracy theorist who has become disconnected from reality to the point of performing actions detrimental to him/herself or others. He doesn’t believe in the moon landing but he’s not really a nipclipper, he’s harmless.

The falling man ends up in a pretty relaxed position of power.

Woo! Mad Style is up! Not one of their best ones, but they didn’t have as much to work with this week as usual.

Quoting myself here…

Because Tom and Lorenzo concur…

No link?

Link (for the season).

So he didn’t purposefully ditch the cardigans for suits because Don showed up, there just wasn’t a scene (2 episodes ago) with him in a creative meeting which is where he usually puts on a cardigan.

Hm. They mentioned the angle of the hat but not the mismatched color.

I don’t know; my father was a Mad Men era kind of guy. A professional, a lawyer, and I can remember the adults joking that he was hanging onto hats much longer than a lot of men —like into the 70s. And I don’t remember he had an overabundance of hats. I remember in particular a dark green one and a wool felt dark gray maybe for winter but I can’t imagine men having hats to go with every suit. More like to go with overcoats.

That said, yes, I did notice that it didn’t really go with the suit he was wearing as others have mentioned.

It was clear from not long after Ginsberg appeared in the series that the writers had him developing a serious psychotic illness. I thought they might combine the inevitable breakdown with the Stonewall riots, but it seems that won’t be happening now.

I don’t think Stephanie is in Oakland. When she called Don and Megan and said she was in Oakland, it looked like the Capitol Records building was in the background. I think she was calling from the same phone booth she originally called from. She’s still in LA. I wonder what she’s up to.

The Capitol Records building was in the background of her first phone call.
It was not in the background of her second call. If you look at the Mad Style link above. they have still from that scene. They note how its not clear that it’s Oakland, but she and the background people are dressed more warmly than what would make sense for LA.

What is so wrong with a cardigan, anyway? That’s what boggles me: Lou with a cardigan does bring a certain Pittsburgher to mind, and yet his personality is the complete opposite – sour, impatient, petty and uncreative.

Maybe Stephanie’s not even pregnant, and is just trying to milk cash out of Don.

Thanks! I knew the scene was weird. I wanted to go back and rewatch it more closely, but my husband erased it off the dvr. I’ll check out Mad Style.
