Mad Men - "Shut the door. Have a seat." - (Spoilers after airing)

I wonder if they have to get permission from the real McCann Ericksonto use their name in the plot, or from the other companies for that matter. Personally I love the fact that they use products like Clearasil, Pampers, TWA and Lucky Strike instead of Zitsaway, Nappers, BFA and Happy Sticks (i.e. off-brands that you know are based on real products) as it adds that much more reality to the show, but it’s not always flattering to the real product (as in Lee Garner, Jr., putting the moves on Sal.)

That said I wouldn’t mind see them taking on McMann-Tate for an account.

I can see Sal coming back something like the blacklisted writers and directors during the McCarthy Era- working from home under an assumed name for cash. I hope so as I liked the character.

Maybe someone will redo Bewitched with all of the drinking, smoking and sex of Mad Men.

Well … Sal got shafted (and not in a good way) by Roger’s edict and then Don delivering the ax blow. I don’t know how eager he would be be to come back to that context. Plus the Lucky Strike molester is still the main cash cow.

Genius! That would be so awesome. Which contemporary actors would play the characters? Did they actually smoke on Bewitched? I forget.

Hmm… that might work. I don’t think any of them at Sterling-Cooper-Draper-Pryce even play golf.

Larry is clearly Roger, the unseen McMann is clearly Burt, but I can’t see either Darrin as being nearly as horndoggy as Draper (though Dick Sargent had something in common with Salvatore).

I’m certain that Pete and Roger do. As much as an asshole as St. John is, he was right when he implied that playing golf is a big part of an account man’s job.

Would you drink a cup of coffee that Lois made?

Once the new Mrs. Sterling’s new car smell is gone I wonder if Roger will re-hook with Joan (whose marriage seems less than the stuff of Hallmark cards and Harlequin romances).

I would say Bert is Dr. Bombay!

I was kind of shocked when Bert came right out and called Roger’s new wife a trollop ie “a whore” and Roger was pissed, but that was about it.

Lois is the least of the reasons I wouldn’t work at Sterling-Cooper. Even if I did drink coffee. Or alcohol. :stuck_out_tongue:

It occurrs to me… Don is of the opinion that Sal shoulda just sacked up and done the Lucky Strike molester. Don is now single. And horny – we well know that. And he’s got a new company that really needs the business…

Ratings next season could be looking up!

Kind of his initial reason for Bobbie Barrett, no?

Kinsey (i.e. Beardface) actually did get screwed. And he probably did deserve it. The Fantastic Four took Peggy, Pete and Harry Crane (the TV guy). Cosgrove will probably do okay – he’s Vice-President of Sales or whatever his title was. He might not get as plum a role in his new job but he wouldn’t have kept that role under McCann Erickson anyway.

Anyway, what’s up with the working out of a hotel room? That seems like a pricey way to run a business. Wouldn’t it make much more sense to rent an apartment or small office somewhere?

They needed to be set up overnight. I do commercial real estate leases and sales for a living. A commercial lease typically takes at least a few days to get negotiated and approved. In talking to real estate old timers it wasn’t all that much different in the old days.

Re Kinsey where ever he goes he’s going to need an office with a door and a lock.

And there was no such thing as an “Executive Suite” where you could just set up a business in a day. Main unmentioned problem with the hotel is that I can’t see them getting a direct line into their suite at that short of notice. Any incoming calls would have to route through the hotel switchboards.

Nice finale review in Salon

Isn’t there a big problem here of theft of company materials, breaking of contracts, stealing clients, etc?

Even in the 60’s, this stuff would get you in trouble. Taking company files? Intellectual property?

They were fired, and this got them out of their contract… Except that once they set up a new company, especially with the guy who ‘fired’ them being one of the partners, it would be clear that there was fraud involved, and a court would nail them against the wall and force them to pay big damages. I think the theft of the company’s files and clients could land them in jail.

Maybe that’s part of what next season will be about - the legal fallout from all this.

I can see theft of files getting them in trouble, but I don’t think the firings could be legally considered fraud. Pryce had the power to fire them, he exercised it, and then got fired himself. I’m just wondering if Cooper/Sterling/Draper still benefit from the purchase of PPL.

No, Pete is clearly Darrin, and Trudy would actually be a much more apt Samantha than Betty. Joan could be the Evil Cousin :D.

Lois? Bumbling Aunt Clara (I loved her!)
