Oh, yeah. FYI, their house is in Dominion Hills, on Longfellow St., where I grew up 1947-1966.

If it really goes that late, I might be able to make it: I’ll be in Baltimore that day for a 2pm dinner w/family, but Falls Church is on my way home (more or less) and I could probably arrive around 5 or 6pm.
My first (potential) Doper outing, wow! It would be cool to meet some of y’all. That is, if relatively new Dopers who haven’t interacted much with Opal yet are welcome to attend . . . ? 
(For now, I’m just a “maybe” – as you say, the event is nearly a month off, so I’ll know better in a few weeks.)
Hmmm. I think I’ll resolve to party with MAD friends on New Year’s Day and see off dear Opal in proper fashion. That should be an easy one to keep! 
Dominion Hills? My brother lived a block over on Livingston St at one time. I’ll bet your folks bought the house for about $30,000 and now it’s worth about $500,000.
It will be great to meet you samclem but your mod hat won’t be of much use: the MADs are a hard bunch to moderate.

Bought new in 1947, paid cash-- $12,500. Hard to believe they go for the kind of money they do today. My dad always kicks himself for not buying the house next door at the same time, and renting it out. He had the money.

I want to get to Midnight by 10pm, which means that I will be leaving the restaurant to go get ready probably between 8 and 9pm. Anyone who wants to go to Midnight with Brooke and Dan and me is welcome to come, but also it’s not like the restaurant is gonna throw everyone out just because a couple of us are leaving. The real locals call it “May - retta”, but “Merry - etta” seems to be the pronunciation of choice for transplants.
According to Dan (my SO who I am pretty much moving there to be with) who lives in Marietta and has lived in Atlanta his whole life, the only people who call it “May-retta” are people who grew up “on farms in Southern Georgia” and everyone from around the Atlanta area calls it “Mary-etta”.
