A couple of months ago, I posted a thread about the possibility of me hosting a DopeFest this fall. Well, a couple of days ago, I was at Jonathan Chance’s shindig in Ohio, and nyctea scandiaca was there. I’d heard that she might be interested in hosting Dope-A-Ween, so she and I were discussing it. She said she was only going to do it if no one else was interested, so we agreed that I would do it. Halloween is on a Sunday this year, so we could do it on Friday the 29th, or Saturday the 30th. What do you all think?

Now, my house is nothing special; in fact, you might think I’ve decorated it as a haunted house, but no, it always looks like this! Really, for a lot of different reasons, we’ve done amazingly little to fix it up. Including the idea, right from the start, that this is not a permanent home. But it’ll keep the rain off our heads, the cold out, and the noise in, sufficiently to have a get-together. Bonuses of our location are a super market and liquor store practically right out our front door, incase we run out of anything!

I’m thinking I’ll make a big ol’ crock pot full of chili, and then everyone can bring some stuff, and it’ll be fun.

I have space for a few folks to crash here if they need to, too.

For anyone who might not know, Cumberland is about 2 and 1/2 hours from Baltimore, and about 2 hours from DC (less if you drive really fast :wink: ).

So, I know it’s early, but who thinks they might be in, and which night would ya’ll prefer?

Oh, as a bonus, the leaves might be real nice up here in the mountains about then.

Depending on finances, of course, the Doorses may be able to make it. Two adults and a kid who eats like an adult.

I know exactly what you mean. There have been Fests I’ve had to miss because gas was just too darned expensive! I sure hope you can come, though!

Those of us coming from Baltimore & DC would be getting a pretty late start if it’s on Friday, so it’d make more sense to me to do it on Saturday.

Yes, a Saturday would be best.

A question: last year, Nate had his party the weekend before Halloween weekend, which enabled many of us to go to Dope-A-Ween AND other Halloween festivities the weekend of. So do you think we could/should maybe do it the weekend before?

I know there’s gonna be a lot of Halloween stuff going on in my neck of the woods, and it would be cool if I was able to do all of it. What do y’all think?

ultrafilter, you’re right, but I thought there was no harm in asking.
nyctea, a good thought. Also, I think that trick-or-treating in this neighborhood might be that Saturday night (around here, we have assigned trick-or-treating nights, depending on what neighborhood you’re in), which means I’d have to be answering the door every two and a half seconds to hand out candy. Okay, so what would you all think about having it on the 23rd? That would work fine for me.

Well, I wouldn’t want to conflict with the NYC thing. Perhaps the weekend of the 14th or maybe the weekend after Halloween?

You don’t have to stick with the Halloween concept unless you’ve got your heart set on it. Didn’t you say you would have a fest around the same time the Fall colors peak in your neck of the woods?

Well, Anita, you’re right. The only thing about the Halloween was that nyctea scandiaca and I sort of decided on it. However, I’d be willing to guess that the world would not come to a crashing halt if there were no MAD Dope-a-ween this year! :eek:

Any dopefest fizzy and I attend would want to be on the weekend. It still takes a few hours to get to the NOVA area, and I’d much rather do 4 hours one day and 3 the next than 7 on one day.

I’ve not been to an event yet. Do you kinda invite yourself, or are they for the “in” crowd?

Not that I’m asking for this particular event. I have to stay closer to home as Mrs. Moto gets closer to her due date.

OK-I need to get this straight. The NYC Dopefest is on the weekend of the 23rd. The world will come to an end the weekend after? Hey-I won’t waste the money on a costume damage waiver that way.

That also gives me just under two months to piss away my entire net worth. :wink:

You post saying you’ll go, generally. Some have gone without posting, but generally nobody gives a rat’s ass. “Oh, hey, I don’t remember you saying you’d be here. Welcome! Don’t mind the goat, he had some bad newspaper.”

Beside that, WRT the "in"crowd business, there are so many little grouplets of folks here that a person in with one group might not necessarily be in with another. Which group gets priority? How do you decide?

It’s a lax atmosphere, or at least it has been for every fest I’ve attended (over 3 dozen). If you’re gonna piss in someone’s beer, make sure it’s American beer - the drinker likely won’t notice the difference;)

Mr. Moto, not only are you (and the mrs. for that matter) more than welcome to attend, but I think you’d like discussing politics with my hubby. The board’s a little liberal for his taste :wink: .

’Punha, I wouldn’t attempt to have it on a weekday, as I’d have school schedules, etc. to deal with.

There’s no way that I can make it. I’ll be overseas for a few weeks. No, not there, but definitely overseas.
