[Mafia game] The Realm of Phere

“Me Too” votes are a bloody red flag to me.
care to add?

Granted ** Jan’s ** vote is off the cuff too. But 2 in a row?

Not convinced on the attacks, though I’ll certainly join if that’s what the majority thinks best; I’m not against them on principle, but really due to feasibiilty issues. Along with the pertinent questions raised by Suburban Plankton, I just wonder what would stop someone from agreeing to attack, say, me, while privately PMing pizzamod to attack Red Skeezix or whomever. Basically there’s no way to police this thing, considering that unlike voting, our “attack” actions don’t have to be made in the thread.

To other business. I hate to sound insulting (but there’s probably no way around it), but I totally forgot all about Tanaer. (Sorry.) This game is quite the challenge: first, there are more players than I’m used to; second, there are more inactive players than I’m used to; and third, there are such long lulls between Dusk and Night, and between Dawn and Day. (I’m not blaming you and I understand it can’t be helped, pizzaguy; I know the complexity of the game requires more behind-the-scenes activity than usual.)

Anyway, kvetching over. Thanks for answering my question, Normal Phase and Visorslash. And also for not mocking its stupidity. I figured the votes were just duplicates of your regular votes, but as I said, I’d’ve kicked myself if I didn’t ask and it turned out that the split mechanic had been possible.

I’ll feel much more confident about Weedy’s “very evil” reading = scum if we get another such result. What makes me hesitate is what others have said: why would Phere kill off Scum on his own, assuming there’s some coalition between them and the demon? Maybe Phere’s pissed off at having been bound to them. Or she was PFK and Phere was teaching us all a lesson that no one, not even PFK or scum, is safe. I know others have said Phere is just color, but IIRC others who’ve played pizzaguy games have said that color counts. (Which I must say makes the game more interesting to me. Mafia games seem rather repetitive unless the color differs and affects how we interact.)

Anyway: scum. Seems to be a mini-wagon building on Tanaer merely because s/he’s friends with Weedy and is defensive after finding out she appears to have been “very evil.” Honestly that’s probably how I’d react too, so I have to give Tanaer some benefit of the doubt.

Visorslash, OTOH, seems to have changed his gameplay fairly significantly. He was much more aggressive earlier and now has backed down. This could just be real life intervening (and I apologize if you’ve mentioned you’d be participating less due to RL issues), but such changes are noteworthy and I find that hinky, especially since–if my memory’s correct–it appears to coincide roughly with Dawn and the Weedy reveal.

He’s behaved aggressively, almost hostilely, toward me when I’ve done little to earn it IMHO, quite the opposite, in fact. Also he doesn’t seem to be paying attention to my posts, where I’ve been giving him some not-hugely-subtle cues. Could just mean he’s not used to my playing style and can’t ‘read’ me yet, but nevertheless, I think he’s either being cantakerous or willfully blind.

So what the hell, I’ll

vote Visorslash

…at least until I get some sense that he’s willing to work as a team, assuming he’s Town.

We’ve got some time, and I’ve mulled this over.

The lack of information and reveals is crippling me.

I’m a watcher ( of sorts) meaning I am able to watch a player at Night and see who visits them.

Night 2 I watched ** Normal ** and ** gnarly charlie ** visited. ( the other Nights no one visited my targets)

There appeared to be no effect at least publicly.

I made a case on ** charlie ** because I gathered he was up to no good. ( I didn’t think he was there to protect)

** Normal ** seems to be able to block Day attacks perhaps Night attacks too. + the double vote ( Power Town or Power Scum?)

On the other foot.

If ** charlie ** is a Town investigator I’ve put him in a pinch. ( but if that’s the case he would/should have left a crumb? )
I still don’t know if this is the right thing to do. But I’m doing it anyway.

I want to play this game. Lack of reveals is frustrating and I don’t know who to trust. Mayhaps if this gets me killed I will live again.= I like my role would like to play it more
maybe others have some intel they can use mine with

NETA if someone didn’t see me it’s because they couldn’t… not because I was not there.

Normal and gnarlycharlie, together at night? Perhaps they’re having secret trysts, and they’re this horror tale’s doomed lovers – or perhaps the lovers standing exhausted but victorious at the end of a long battle.

Seriously, I’m glad you shared, LightFoot. Can you tell us whom you watched on Nights 1 and 3, or might this be dangerous for either you or your watchees?

NETA: Oh crap, I just spotted your mentioning that the other Nights no one visited your targets. Well, can you tell us who your targets were, at least?

And as a watcher “of sorts,” would you be able to see your targets leave, or would you only see people visiting them?

I’ve only the one time been told who visited. the other two times I was told that no-one visited them

N1 ToeJam (I thought there might be some heat there)
N3 Suburban ( see above)
I didn’t watch charlie because if he was a traveller I would see nothing.

Phere-as-Askthepizzaguy didn’t kill anyone on his own. In fact, I don’t think I remember anybody saying that, either. Here’s the relevant rule on that:

My bolding, and underlining, and embiggening.

Askthepizzaguy is just color. Phere can’t be “pissed” at anyone. Nor can he teach us a lesson. His “actions” are color for actual players’ actions.

Color provided hints in De’endee, too, but I wasn’t an active participant. As per the rules, Phere is a color representation of various player-directed actions.

I’m not picking on you, Choie, your quote was just handy. We’ve spent what feels like pages debating back and forth about what Phere means. The rules tell us, guys.

Used to your playing style? I have played with Normal Phase before. Maybe a few others such as Fubbles/gnarly, briefly, and I was having too much fun galavanting as scumbag to notice them. It takes time to get used to playing styles. I haven’t been paying that much attention because I have been busy primarily, and I have other things to do.

I don’t have much to add. I can’t change class because I have too low health. If I take a day action and own up to it, like I have every other day, I will be attacked. People seem to have grudges on me. I am “unproductive” and not helping town. Go hunt lurkers if you want to kill people like that. Not me.

I am not acting hostile towards you either. I would be happy to vote Tanaer, but the guy who attacked me did it for stupid reasons, and I don’t really like that. I’m participating, lurkers are not.

Vote: RealityTrip

I think people complaining about the host needing an extension are being a bit up themself, to be honest. It’s not a right that you get to play in mafia games, and you must realise that the people hosting the games are real people and hosting for your (as well as their) enjoyment. If you want to complain about it, I don’t understand why you are playing. You signed up to play this game, you understand that people can go through problems, or have life impacting on their time. So why complain and moan? Sorry, but it seems like a dick move for no logical reason.

@ Choie

I’m not always aggressive as a player, just sometimes, when it suits me. In this instance it will get me attacked almost killed.

Something else that has been bugging me:
People saying “I have a town lean on x”, you’re painting a target on their back if they’re innocent. Post your scum leans, not your town leans.

At the moment, the playerbase is too large for me to make an educated decision, and I am a more mid to endgame player myself.

I still want Gadarene to die as well, but that doesn’t seem to be happening unfortunately.

@ ** Astral ** I run the same path with your thoughts on colour fwiw of course.

List of bad humans:

Suburban Plankton
Visorslash

I eat they brains! Nom nom nom.

Vote: Suburban Plankton

I’ve seen comments about wanting things to move quicker. But I must have missed the vehemence that you portray.

  • where did your comment stem? *

I don’t necessarily agree. Askthepizzaguy qua Askthepizzaguy is not a player in this game and can’t win; that’s what the man said. But he said nothing about the character of Phere not being an entity with its own potential motives and reasons for behaving the way it does. Phere is clearly under control of someone or a group of someones, but unless my editorial eye misleads me, he isn’t happy about it. It would not surprise me if Askthepizzaguy (as game designer) created some who-the-fuck-knows rule about what scum, or the traitor, or the scummy traitor, or the traitor and scum team together, might cause Phere to rebel if they ask it to do something it chafes at.

Askthepizzaguy is IMHO the Quentin Tarentino of Mafia directors. He’ll do what he likes just because it fucks with our minds and cracks him up regardless of whether it might go against the rules or what’s considered “typical” Mafia games. It might be ugly to watch but damn me if it isn’t exhilerating.

True, and color provided absolutely nothing in Thrill of the Chase. Which means… what, exactly? Are you secretly modding this game and we haven’t been told? Seriously, this is pizza’s game, and from what I’ve read and seen, pizza is a no-holds-barred kinda guy who lives for making crazy shit happen in his games.

You’ve given me an example of a game where color meant a little something; I gave you an example of a game where color meant absolutely bupkis. Why can’t the color in this game mean a heckuva lot more than in other games?

Frankly I hope it does mean something, because without the color, Mafia games are all the same to me, and honestly, I wouldn’t see the attraction in them. I hate to seem like a heretic but to enjoy these games, I need context, not just endless debating of who seems townish or scummish because someone said “lie” too many times in one post (an actual argument made in “The Thrill of the Chase”).

See, now, this is what I mean about you not reading my posts correctly.

I opined why you might not be reading my posts carefully, and specifically said you probably just weren’t used to my playing style – giving you a perfectly understandable excuse – and now you’re answering me defensively, as if I’d demanded that you should be used to my playing style.

Seriously dude. Stop skimming and READ. THE. POSTS. Or how the hell can you claim to make any reasonable deductions?

Still not reading. Still claiming that the only reason people mistrust you is ‘cause we have grudges or something. If I have any grudge against you, it’s because you’re not paying close attention to what is being said to you, and that’s really bleedin’ annoying, and leads one to believe that you don’t really care about the game – or worse, are willfully misunderstanding people. Elizabeth Bennet can pull that off and make it look charming, but, with respect, you ain’t no Elizabeth Bennet.

Yeah, I’ll repeat LightFoot’s question. The hell is this coming from?

It’s frustrating because there’s some lulls between Dusk/Night and Dawn/Day, but no one’s gotten on Askthepizzaguy’s case about it. It’s just stating the truth, as I’m sure pizzaguy can certainly handle. He knows how passionate people get when playing Mafia – he’s done it himself, and how!

Maybe it’s not a great tactic, then? Assuming you want to play instead of just get killed. I didn’t even know Mafia had “Suicidal” as a role.

Y’know, people can make deductions from what you’re leaving out. If you say A, B and C all have scum leans, what does this tell us about what you think of D, E and F?

It’s supposed to happen… how, again? Just 'cause you want it? Or maybe it’d help if you maybe offered an argument that takes all the various incidents since Day One into account?

Jesus wept.

I’m not going to get into an argument with you Choie. Make all the points and arguments you want, I am done dealing with you.

Miscellaneous comments:

Concerted attacks seem wise, but as others say, trying to make 2nd-place Lynch candidate the Day-Attack victim has severe flaws. I propose that we seek a consensus Attackee who is not up for Lynch (though possibly a Lynch leader from the Day before). It shouldn’t be hard to find a consensus since there are many appropriate candidates to choose from: Lurkers and (sorry Mosier) our Zombie. And, since there may be Town-side Night Attacker(s) as well and Night-time strategy is allowed, if the Lynch runner-up is the best attackee, that can be arranged, starting the Attack a half-cycle later but after the Lynchee reveal.

But I’m not sure a public consensus on Attacks is necessary. We have two outed Archers who can exchange ideas via PM, and other Attackers can contact them. (If the PM is from someone untrusted, the Town-side attackers can listen but not respond.)

With several people already making partial claims, and with the need to coordinate attacks, the idea of a mass claim will come up. I’m not at all sure that mass claim is wise, but will point out that it could be conducted without a usual disadvantage. Instead of claiming in order, one trusted player could be chosen to receive PM’s from everyone and then do mass reveal when he’s satisfied.

BTW, I have a magic object I’ve not yet tried to use. It’s neither a ring nor a pendant. It is black, if that means anything, as I mentioned some Days ago. If anyone has suggestions for me, please PM.

At present I have no Scum read on any active Player. I was thinking of Lynching a Lurker (like Red Skeezix), the Zombie, or one of our confessed Neutral/Third Party players. Instead a wagon is developing on Tanaer. Can someone please link to post(s) summarizing a case against him?

This is me doing another flying post without being able to catch up.

I noticed I’m getting a bit of a following as a lynch target. I guess I knew that would happen sooner or later. Especially if Weedy was scum, after she defended me. But also because my

I’m not saying I thought Weedy looked scummy. If you look back to when I was directly asked, I said I was too close to tell, but couldn’t quite clear her. Her play reminded me a bit of the one game I played with her, when she was scum, but I didn’t have a town Weedy to compare it to. (In some other words obviously because I have no time to post hunt). I suppose in my previous post I was hoping it was some kind of instinct holding me back from clearing her. I’m pretty impressed at her pulling the wool over my eyes face to face. Obscurely proud of her to be honest.

I’m pretty bummed at her dying because being able to talk with her was fun, but now I can’t. Actually, talking with her about the game, wondering what might lay behind her side if she was scum was a buzz. I wish I had a better memory, but hopefully some things will bubble up. Now there’s this great big elephant in the room.

Anyway, I can see why you might be worried about me, but don’t waste your lynch on me. My link with Weedy is as a friend, not a scum-buddy. I’ll just turn up another good soldier - unless you leave me alive long enough to get to bard. Bard was always a long shot as one of the newbs, but I dared to hope. I still do. Probably because I’ve had an awesome day. [If anybody cares that was because - a) I scored a job as a choir director, and b) an internationally acclaimed docco director liked my film score in his workshop]

Choie, thanks for the benefit of the doubt.
