MAFIA: The Road to Canterbury - Game Thread

Interesting thoughts on the Squire, Ender (and yes, I know, I’m supposed to be prepping for my meeting – damn game). Let’s say the Squire were town – they’re probably going to be better served with “use dead guy’s ability” than they would “discover dead guy’s results”. And since we know the Shipman died without killing, that means the Squire has a free kill out there if they were to choose to use it.

At least, probably. Here’s the conversation I’ve had with story:

Chaucer Night Four Action:
Use Shipman power on Suburban Plankton
As a result of whatever happened last Night, have I spent the Shipman power? According to the rules:

So was this a block or a protect?

Thanks much…
So, does when he says “the Shipman power is spent”, does he mean that my crack at it is spent, or that Shipman power was no longer on the table for anyone? The “thinking about how to answer your question properly” bit definitely has me scratching my head.

Anyway, that leaves open the thought that if the Squire is scum and they have the Memento, there’s a possibility of a two-townie-kill night – so, hopefully one of those pieces doesn’t fall into place.

Why did you not share this with us earlier?

Re: Snickers’ potential results.

I looked up his role. Nowhere does his role state that he receives the result of whatever targets him.

Once per game, you may target a player of your choice at Night and stand guard over them at Night. From that point forward, the first Night action to target your target - be it investigation, kill attempt, or other - will affect you instead. This ability lasts until triggered (or until you die). Unfortunately, while you are standing guard, your target will find him or herself unable to act. Note that the Lucky Penny can penetrate your guard in either direction.

Further, we can’t know if scum targeted him or his target, so we can’t even clear a townie by figuring out who was guarded.

Earlier when? I shared the question with you a couple of days ago (well, I publicly asked story to please answer my PM), and now that I’ve received an answer, I’m sharing that too.

Maybe. Maybe not. I’m not looking at Snickers role, I’m looking at the Squire’s.

"If your target has already used his/her power, you will learn what (s)he did and what the results were. "

Let’s say Snickers protected Player A and Scum attacked Player A, thus killing Snickers.

Things we can learn from the squire:

 1. Snickers protected player A
 2. Player A was attacked by scum. That’s huge in that it potentially confirms another Townie.
 3. Maybe, possibly who it was that attacked player A. This remains to be seen as it’s up to Story’s interpretation of his own rules. But if we get this information, it’s an even bigger coup than #2.

Then again, maybe Snickers was attacked directly. We’ll still learn who Snickers guarded and we’ll learn that the guardee wasn’t attacked. Not as useful, but still important information.

I’m pretty sure that all you’d learn is 1). The result is that Snickers is dead. Whether she died from protecting someone else or because she herself was attacked is irrelevant. Nothing in her role would have specified that information so there’s no reason the squire would learn it.

Okay, my mistake. I was assuming you had asked these questions early after the Day had started, and gotten your responses during the Day.

This is wrong, as I’m sure you know. The physician knows when someone is poisoned, whether the physician is town or scum.

You pay no attention to this game do you?

Not edited to add, let go of the sneaker, you based your initial suspicions on wrong assumptions.

good job town (and scum) who voted Burby.

my theory about the scum team makeup just might hold water since he is an experienced player who plays here often. in the unclaimed list that would make Mahaloth and Inner Stickler players to watch out for. Mentalguy would make a distant third possibility because he doesn’t play often. Astral subbed in so he not likely to be scum. again this is premised on the belief that scum would choose experienced players who they’ve played with before because you want people you can depend on.

as was opined by others, there is at least one scum in the unclaimed list, the former prioress. personally, if Hal is being honest, i’d like him to shoot there. it narrows the pool. of course, he’s free to shoot wherever he wishes or not shoot at all.

an option Tomorrow is a mass claim. some players don’t like this in principle. others may have disliked the idea since all of us have unique roles. however, since most will agree that the prioress is scum, it becomes a worthwhile proposition.

that’s my understanding as well. if the physician is still Town, then he would be informed. if he is now scum, he would also know because it would have been discussed by his scum mates unless he wasn’t paying attention.

Ya know, I just spent five minutes reading this and reading this, mentally yelling “well of fucking well course I’d hit the Prioress, if I knew who he was – so why are you acting like they’ve been revealed?!”

Then I realized you were saying “target one of the unclaimed”. Oops.

Well, if it makes you feel any better, I don’t see any way that it would change any scum plans for me to say up front that yes, that was the action I submitted. Fingers crossed – both that I hit scum, and that the death color is as awesome as I hope.

I’d check with Storyteller before submitting any actions.

Assuming they hit the Seraph, don’t they have night protection? Won’t your kills be wasted then? It seems to me you can only kill town or fail if they kill the Seraph.

It all comes down to when their night protection kicks in. The night they kill the Seraph, or the night after. I’d hate for you to waste your powers, so I’d recommend checking first.

Here’s the relevant part:

if the Seraph is killed by the Scum, they will enjoy this one Night’s protection and earn the right to exchange any one of their unused tools for another one from the list, if they so desire.

The operant part is “This one Night’s protection.” Does “this” refer back to the previous section regarding us lynching the Seraph, or does “this” refer to the night they kill the Seraph?

You know, now that I think about it, even learning your kill failed on someone would be phenomenally useful. Maybe you should go ahead anyway.

Well that’s a pretty damn good point. Hopefully story isn’t too wrapped up in the Olympics that he doesn’t see the question before Dawn.

story can you please answer Astral’s question?

On the plus side, if the Seraph is nightkilled and my kill is blocked, that would (just about) confirm my target as scum (at least to me).

NETA: Yeah, what you said.

First off, I cannot believe you answered his question, since it was never in doubt. Mosier screwed up, he must be one of them people that hate to admit it.

I am in agreement with you on the possibility of a mass claim. My biggest concern, and one that should concern anyone while reading this, is…

Where o’ where is Stanislaus in your reasoning? Don’t get me wrong gnarlycharlie I still think you’re a scummy scumsucking scum but I do think there is a more solid lead on going after the unconfirmed and finding the Prioress.

My worry is, wouldn’t scum have thought of that before he used it?

I don’t follow the question.

Oh! I think I get it. The question is, if the Scum kill the Seraph, are they immune to Night kills for the Night on which they do the killing or on the Night after that?

Since all actions resolve simultaneously at Dawn or Dusk, the answer is: the latter. If the Scum kill the Seraph on Night Two (let’s say), the Scum would be immune to Night kill on Night Three.

Day Six, Dawn

*In the darkness, they huddled together, and waited for the sun to rise.

But it did not rise.

Oh, the sky brightened a bit, as if the sun held just below the horizon. But the sun did not appear. The wind did not blow. The birds of the morning held silent, respectful. It was almost as if all of nature sat in mourning against the death of one of its greatest creations.

Mosier, who was the SUMMONER and the SERAPH, has been slain. Darkness reigns on this sunless day. He had acted, three separate times.

One among them had impressed the others as the most kind, the most faithful - a soft-spoken man of decency and humility. They called upon him to speak a few words in memory of the fallen angel, but the bloody sword wound in his side left him short of speech. Then they grieved even further… but not for long. On his neck he bore the telltale mark of the rose; in the pouch of his robes they found three strange cards - wafer thin, hard but flexible, the material used to craft them surely not of this world.

Inner Stickler, who was THE PARSON and part of the BROTHERHOOD OF THE ROSE, has also been killed.

But it was not over. It took them until well after breakfast to find the third.

It was now an elegantly-clad skeleton, artfully and picturesquely arranged on a nearby stone, now no more than part of the scene to intrigue those who might pass by in the future.

Mahaloth, who was THE SQUIRE and Town, is dead. He had used his power.*

Day Six begins here, and will end on Thursday, August 2, between 1 and 5 PM EST. Happy lynching!
