Mafia: The Thrill of the Chase [Newbie Friendly!]

True, but it seems a disadvantage to town only. Scum will already know if he was or wasn’t town (although not if he was third party). Whereas not knowing whether or not he was town is crucial for us in order to look at his votes.

Also, a certain amount of self interest would make me very happy to find out if he’s the serial killer.

Is non reveal of modkilled players usual? I know that in Mystery Mafia, the only other game I played in with a modkill, the role was revealed.

Echoing what the possibly-SK-or-scum-or-Town Scathach says. It seems like a major disadvantage to Town, as does the Hider role. Then again we had a bodyguard, a doctor and a roleblocker, so maybe that helped balance things out.

Forgot to mention anything about the dearly departed: sorry, Mental Guy and fubbleskag. Rest in peace.

… and we also had a Cop. Forgot to mention that above.

oh for the love of christ, stop misrepresenting what I said. I did not say that you were hard to get along with. I said that you had a bitchy tone and that I thought it wasn’t the first game where this had been noted; it certainly wasn’t the first time it had been noted in this game, in any case.

HEY. Dead men tell no tales, fubbleskag. Retreat thou to the cloudy firmament that is thy new dwelling forevermore.

the dead are allowed non-strategy, so a ghostly pfffft to you

Ok, I’ve been debating on when the proper time to claim is. But seeing the player list, there are only 8 of us left, and if we assume 2 more scum, that leaves 6 non-scum…

I might be able to help turn some of these players into blue players… See… I’m the cop… (there I said it, and that means my death warrant has been signed)…

My role PM:
Role PM (mafia)
Convenient Twin (Town Backup)

“Oh no! The character we just killed off was a fan favorite! Who will read book 16 if good ol’ Javier isn’t around to crack wise!”

“Never fret, fellow author. For you can bring in the convenient twin. Nobody mentioned him before, but there he is, ready to take over for poor sad Javier. In fact, it’s like he never even left!”

“Boy, that is convenient!”

Power:
Whenever someone dies, you can take over their powers. It doesn’t matter how they die. You can take special scum powers (i.e. not just killing), but you’ll still be a townie.
After night one, Trepa gave me the option to take the Bodyguard or Cop powers. I figured Cop would be more useful, so I took his powers. I was then sent gregorio’s PM:
Dedicated Detective (Town Cop)

He always gets his man. The hard-boiled, tough-as-nails detective who’s never gonna retire–until someone retires him. Strangely attractive through a mass of scars and disfigurements, this detective is too married to his job to listen to any of (his/her) pursuers. That doesn’t keep them from fawning over him whenever they get a chance.

Powers:

  1. Each night, you can investigate someone. You’ll learn that player’s role and alignment the next Day, assuming nothing bad happens to you during the night.
On night two, I investigated Mahaloth.

Night three, Mental Guy (what luck, someone I cleared ends up dead… Dang it)

And last night, I went ahead and investigated Scathach.

So, of the remaining players, I can vouch for myself (of course), Mahaloth and Scathach. If we believe choie’s claim (which I do), and Septimus’ claim, that leaves 3 people.

special ed

As I said last night, I lean town on him, because he lead to the Gnarly lynch. Scum would have sat back and let a townie get lynched.

Svejk

Neutral to scum, has been helpful lately, and since Scathach is town, his original vote change doesn’t sound scummy anymore. But, if we assume 2 more scum, I would be looking at him.

fluiddruid

Has been absent, and hasn’t done much scum hunting. Of the remaining players, she leads the scummiest to me. I’ll have to re read her in detail, but she is the scummiest of the remaining players to me.

Vote fluiddruid

Now, there is ALWAYS the possibility that there is a GodFather, and one of my investigations is corrupt, but then it is also possible that septimus is lying.

awesome

Hot diggety.

I’m willing to believe the claim for the moment, and since fluiddruid or special ed were my two main candidates, I’m more than happy to

** vote fluiddruid **

What the frikkin’ frack. This is a thing? A real thing?

The claim seems credible, though I’d really appreciate some substance if you’re going to lynch me other than a lean. I recognize I haven’t been able to participate as heavily as I would have liked (really, due to circumstances beyond my control), but is that the sole reason for lynching me?

I’ll claim, not that I have much to claim. I am Vanilla Town. Here is my PM.

PM Title (exactly as copied/pasted, with symbol preserved): Role PM` (mafia)

Vanilla Townie

Hi, and welcome! You are a (pure young maiden/handsome young fellow), looking for an (everlasting soulmate/dearly beloved wife) in among the crowd of (jerks/skanks). Along the way, you’ll have to deal with (intrigue/betrayal/fright) and bask in the beauty of (perfectly sculpted muscles/bright blue eyes/lovely flowing hair/exquisite dresses). Really, though, what you’re afraid of is those people out there who hang out in bars and will leave you in the lurch. You know, the scum of the dating pool.

Special Powers:
None

Don’t mods send out that message to everyone in the game, to prevent handshaking?

Which message specifically? I didn’t get a vanilla PM.

Hirka, what led you to investigate Mental Guy on N2? I’d’ve thought you’d go for fubbleskag, special ed, or one of the other controversial/scummier-seeming folks (though obviously fubbles wasn’t scum), even me, Svejk or PCM would’ve fit the bill. Though Mahaloth was a good choice.

I don’t mean to second-guess, God knows my blocking choices haven’t been stellar, but I’m genuinely interested in what pinged you about Mental Guy enough to investigate him.

Also I reeeeally want to hear from septimus already. Seems like he’s gone eerily silent lately.

Well, in any event, Trepa did claim she would send out Vanilla PMs as well as fake town PMs. Tough break, fluiddruid - but your claim won’t fly.

vote fluiddruid

I’ll make a case against you. With fubbleskag dead, you are my prime candidate for a lynch anyway.

  1. you’ve missed EoD two times out of four. Reluctance to commit oneself to a vote is a scum tell in my mind.
  2. you’ve generally contributed quite little in terms of scum hunting - why would you, if you’re not willing to vote anyway?
  3. the votes you did cast have been easy. On D3 you cast a redundant vote for Gnarly, knowing he’d flip scum; on D1 anyone can vote anything since no one knows nothing.
  4. you make weird flip flops on the status of septimus and of a vig (see my post here). When called on it, you don’t really provide an answer that properly addresses my issues. I want to know why you changed your mind about Septimus and the vig, and you say nothing about the vig, and you unvote Septimus but don’t explain why you went from believing him to not believing him. The one thing you have is a difference in PMs: ’ it seems kinda bastard-mod to pepper just a few weird PM titles in there.’ Reread the quote from above. Especially in view of your own ‘claim’, I find that this shifty game with the PM titles which tell you exactly nothing, which Trepa has stated from the beginning, strikes me as harping on something tiny and inconsequential to distract attention from what is really important, to create a diversion and discord, to set up town against its doctor. Something scum would do, really.
When I called you on this in post#1067, you never replied.

Precaution–mod-kills with role reveals can lead to degenerate gameplay.

Wasn’t it posted around the beginning of the game? I thought I remember seeing it before.

First, it was the 3rd night I investigated him, I didn’t have any powers the first night, so I know it can be confusing. As for why? Well, honestly, because I KNEW Mahaloth was innocent (Hence why I’ve been putting him as town all game), so I saw the votes against him Day 3 as a problem. Mental Guy was the first vote against him, who made the major case against him, so made me suspect a scum led case.

While Mahaloth was a good choice to investigate that first night I had power, I admit, it wasn’t as much because I suspected him, but that I thought he would last till later in the game, I honestly didn’t see him getting so many votes the next day. The way I figured my investigations, it was important to get some verified townies in the end game. That is also why I didn’t investigate who I thought was going to be lynched the next day.

Holy crap people, Day just started and we’ve already got a massive snowballing consensus on someone? Not saying fluiddruid’s play hasn’t been spotty at best, but dayum, this is quick work.

Sorry to display my ignorance, but what’s degenerate gameplay?

see the quote from Trepa’s rule post that I posted in the post above.

As has special ed, I wonder what he’s up to. Hope he comes back, I’d like to hear his take on things, esp on Hirka’s claim. Shit - so many roles, am I the only Vanilla townie in this game?

three other things:

**1) Trepa, when is EoD? Friday at 10AM Mountain Grazing Time?
**2) @Hirka, after most of N2 and D3 was spent talking about me and my stupid vote switch, how come you never investigated me, especially when you voted for me and seemed to buy the notion that lynching me could provide useful information on Scathach?
3) [OOG] I am embarking on a trip to splendid Manitoba in mere hours, where there will be much rejoicing and merrymaking as I meet my girlfriends parents for the very first time. Wish me luck. At any rate, my participation in this thread will most presumably drop precipitously over the coming week - my apologies for that![/OOG]

OH right, yes, that. Sorry, from the way that Svejk worded his post, I thought he was saying that everyone was being sent these vanilla PMs,

Oops #2, yes, you’re right. I was thinking of N2 of your new role, rather than literal N2.

I think that makes sense. As much as anything else in the game does, anyway. I do wish your schedule had allowed you to participate more in the early part of the game, because I think hearing your input woudl’ve been tremendously valuable. But I guess that couldn’t have been helped. At any rate, man, it is staggeringly fortuitous that we had a backup considering the double-loss of the Cop and Bodyguard on the first Night!

I wonder if it was your role Trepa was talking about when he mentioned there was one oddball role in here, or whether it was fubbles’s role. Which are more common, Hiders or Backups?

I forgot to mention on this too, Trepa, I don’t have a problem with
the day ending on the 1st… But do you really expect me to get up that early after the New Years Eve excitement? Can we push it later in the day?

Mainly since I figured we could get that information by lynch. As I mentioned up above, I was partly looking to use my investigations to get verified townies in the end game. If I did investigate you overnight, and you showed up town, I was worried there would still be people going after you, and I couldn’t claim that early to protect anyone.

Honestly, I was afraid scum would be able to kill me just from what I’d said already. Last night when choie said I seemed to have PIS, I was scared that might make me a target by scum… I’m sure if they were still hunting for a cop, and didn’t anticipate a town backup, I would have been dead already.

Meeting the girlfriends parents for the first time? Don’t let them think you care more about this game! Good luck!
