Major bugs in SDMB re-skin fixed. What do you think?

I swear I saw it change to gray bars between posts with the usernames centered, but now it’s back to blue.

On my Android, the forum lists only show the icon for a thread, Thread Title/Thread Starter, icon for thread I’m posting in, and Replies. I cannot zoom out, only enlarge. On my desktop, depending on zoom level I can see the field or not. As the page enlarges, fields fall of the display. Not slide to the right - there is no ability to scroll right.

When I previosly tried the board on my standard eb browser on my phone, the print was too small to see on the screen all at once, and enlarging the view meant R-L scrolling, which is difficult on a phone.

Also, the edit window was unusable because it forced centering the view despite the location of the cursor. This version works better.

I saw changes on my PC with Firefox. But Firefox on the Mac doesn’t have them.

No change on mine. If BigT’s script isn’t activated, the big blue bars are still there between every goddamn post.

I’m not sure if this has been discussed yet, but I haven’t seen it so far in this thread.

If I’m looking for a topic that may have been discussed before on the Dope I use Google rather than the board’s essentially worthless search function. Today I was curious if anyone had been discussing the new movie Wind River so I searched on Google for "Wind River site : boards . straightdope . com " (without spaces, naturally). What Google gave me was page after page after page of obvious spam threads. When I clicked one it told me I didn’t have administrator privileges, so obviously they had been sent to the cornfield. I tried it with some other search terms including recent movies (Dunkirk, It) and it didn’t show any spam threads, but a search for “Samsung Galaxy” returned pages of spam threads, all inaccessible.

I’ve never had this problem before, and it’s mighty annoying.

A couple other things.

  1. Looking at the multiple page number block for a thread on my desktop with MS Edge, the bolding of the current page is not obvious. This is consistent with all bolding on this machine from this website. Looking at it on my Samsung Note 3, the bold is distinguishable, though not as much as a color change would be.

  2. I have pulled up the advanced reply page. At my current zoom, there is an alignment issue between the boxes on the page. The page has an interior edit window, a box around that which also encloses the thread tools and smilies, and then another box around that which includes the post title and my identity (“Logged in as Irishman”). However, on this machine, the outer box is actually truncated to a narrow size and the message window is wider, extending past not only the right edge of the underlying block, but also past the gray backdrop and “edge” of the page where the top banner ends. Increasing the zoom sort of fixes this by making the background box almost the width of the page and the inner message window to be about the size of the old backing box. Except the text is now fairly large. Shrinking the page fixes the box size issues to correspond correctly, but the printing is all in microfont.

In the old skin, I previously noticed a similar occurrence with the boxes not synching as the page zoomed, but the microfont on this scale was at normal viewing size, so I never got enlarged enough to see if it also did the second box correspondence shift.

Basically, something is off in the way the boxes correlate, and it is much more noticeable than the old version.

Oh, and I have no WYSIWYG button or mode in Microsoft Edge. I know I didn’t have one in Chrome, either, but I did used to have one in Internet Explorer.

To be clear, no change has been made subsequent or before Ed’s post (not including OP). He’s informing of what is being worked on.

Not on an Android. They don’t have a “tap to top” feature like that. Although I agree the arrow is a distraction.

Seeing as Edge is actively trying for Chrome compatibility, this might have been the case even before the change.

It works in Firefox, and apparently Internet Explorer. Maybe just open up one of those browsers just for the SDMB?

I’ve looked into trying to fix it where the WYSIWYG editor would work on Chrome, but it’s a huge mess–far more complicated than the skin changes I’ve been making here. The only way I’d probably tackle it is if I can find a solution that’s pre-made, and then just tweak it.

Hmm. I tried BigT’s script but nothing changed. Closing and opening the browser, turning the computer off and on, nothing. That was a couple of days ago when it was first mentioned. Nothing changed in the interim either, until this morning. So I assumed that the changes Ed mentioned had gone through.

I suppose my computer could suddenly have decided to notice Greasemonkey; that now seems the more likely option. Why it took so long is beyond me, if that’s the case.

If so, then I recommend that something similar to it be adopted. It’s greatly superior.

Many of us have noticed issues with Greasemonkey running scripts. Deinstalling it and installing TamperMonkey fixes the issue.

More likely, the script just updated to a newer version. How often it checks for updates is dependent on your userscript manager (e.g. Greasemonkey or Tampermonkey).

If you’re on Firefox using GreaseMonkey, I put in a change to make it work there. Before, newer versions of Firefox (or possibly on faster machines) were loading my script too quickly, before there is any header to the page to modify!

Not sure if that was a bug or intended behavior, but it broke a lot of my scripts.

Edit re Morgyn’s post: TamperMonkey actually loads the script later than it should, though it fortunately isn’t an issue here.

One other thing I haven’t seen mentioned: having a reply button at the top of the thread is going to encourage people to post to the thread before reading what other people have already said. This seems like a bad idea, and also uses up valuable real-estate. I’d get rid of it.

How do you activate that script? I thought it was something for the SDMB HTML/webpage programmers to use. Is there a way I can use it? Will it make this new format less hellish?

That happens, and will continue to happen, anyway. If someone wants to a reply after just reading the OP, the location of the reply button won’t have any impact on that decision–nor will it cause someone who would otherwise choose to read the whole thread to suddenly not do so.

Sorry that I am posting without reading the whole thread but on my iPhone no listing of last post. On computer just cosmetic.

But please turn off autosig.

Go to this thread and follow the instructions. I downloaded Tampermonkey just to fix up the format, and it was easy as pie to install and get the script up and running. And, yes, many people on here are already using it. And, yes, it will make the new format a lot less hellish, but only on your desktop or laptop computer (as opposed to your phone or iPad.)

I hated it at first but just today I found to my surprise that it didn’t seem so bad. I guess familiarity is breeding not contempt in this case but acceptance. One minor annoyance, clicking the Straight Dope title at the top of the page used to take you to the front page of the Straight Dope site. It was useful. Now the link just leads you straight back to the SDMB front page, which is not useful at all. One has to scroll down to the bottom to find the right link now.

Multi quote still wasn’t working on desktop yesterday.
