Desktop Mac Safari user here. This is my main remaining complaint – the buttons are huge. I hit command-minus a couple times which makes the default font size and element size (graphic elements etc) shrink to a good point overall but the Reply button is still immense.
On the main page, the thread titles are too far over to the right; I can only see about 20 characters of the “most recent post” thread title.
The lime green highlight color is annoying.
The page numbers no longer highlight the current page being viewed or indicate which pages have been viewed (by coloring the link).
On the sub-forum pages (Cafe Society, for example) the line justification for the “Last Post” column looks like it is down a line from where the other columns (Thread, Replies, Views) are.
Something seemed weird with the type font, but I found that zooming in 1 click reformatted the page to look almost like it used to, only now the type is so big I don’t need glasses to read it even after a long day.
The arrow and the sub-menu on the bottom right of the page are completely stupid and useless, IMO. Scrolling up the top of the page is not so difficult that it needed to be further automated. And the drop-down menu bar is about the same amount of work as scrolling to the top of the page, hitting the link to the main page and then clicking the sub-forum you want, so this saves no time or effort but obscures the page. I find it somewhat annoying that they float on top of every page, useless and in the way.
The overall Windows ME/Fisher-Price/MSN Messenger look is terrible.
I know that was a bunch of complaints, but I want to commend The Management and say that I do support the overall efforts to upgrade and/or modernize the Straight Dope.
Sometimes readability *is *functionality. The light gray bars separated the posts but did not interfere with continuity. One post flowed into another the way a conversation does on a book page.
Those huge blue bars box each post into a separate space, distinct from everything above and below it. Reading a series of individual boxes is more taxing and less understandable than reading a continuous stream. Hundreds of years of book design have taught us what works best.
Links and buttons and such are important, but reading the dialog between and among posters is the core purpose of the Dope. Damage that and everything else is secondary.
I’ll fourth this. This is far and away my biggest problem with the new look. It’s like a conversation where, every time one person stops speaking, someone beats a drum before the next person starts talking.
I dislike that i can no longer see who last posted in a thread on my phone. I see the threads that have had activity, but not who posted last. I see it if i turn on rotation and go into landscape. But i don’t browse that way.
Also, i seem to see trumps ugly mug every few pages as ad. Probably not part of the reskin but still off putting as hell.
This is one of my minor complaints. I use highlighting for editing or tagging and frequently have to re-edit now after mis-highlighting with this hard-to-distinguish color. I’m not sure why green was considered a better color, but at least please make it a darker green.
Is this the right thread for recommending style fixes? There is another easy-to-fix complaint far far more important than the ridiculous highlighting color.
When a post quotes another post, the quotation is enclosed in a box.
On my laptop,*** the black border on that quote box is so thin or dim it is almost impossible to see.*** Do we want to make it hard to tell which is the quotation and which the response?
Am I correct that Font Size 3 is now the default for posts, but that Font Size 2 is the default when Previewing a post? IOW, Preview no longer previews what we’ll see? I’m one that uses Preview a lot and prefer that it … well … Preview what the post will look like!
Please don’t make us start enclosing our entire posts with Size tags. :smack:
