I’ve totally given up on the Cards. Suppan just isn’t pitching well on the road, Rolen and Edmonds look like shit at the plate making it easy to pitch around Albert, Duncan can’t hit lefties and Perez is channeling Tom Seaver.

Well, no. Prior to the first of the current string of series-ending homers (Pratt in 1999, not 2000 as I incorrectly typed) there were 153 playoff series played, 3 or 4 of which ended on a home run (Mazeroski, Carter and Chambliss, plus Bobby Thomson’s homer ended a best-of-3 playoff.) From 1999 to today, including the 5 series ended this year as of just before NLCS Game 7, there have been 54 playoff serieses completed, with Pratt, Ortiz, Burke, Ordonez and Boone, at least. So clearly, there’s a dramatic rise in series-ending homers.
What, no love for Bobby “The Giants win the Pennant!! The Giants win the Pennant” Thomson’s Shot Heard Round the World in the 1951 NL playoff?
Drayton, is that you?
I’m a loyal Cardinals fan, through thick and lots of thin. I am also a terrible sports picker, so I’ve clammed up until now. It’s down to tonight, win or go home. I really hope the Cards win, but I also believe the Tigers will slice up the NL winner.
I always liked that song from The Twelve Chairs, “Hope For The Best, Expect The Worst.” Oy.
I’m afraid you’re right: they’ll have about as much chance as Roy Horn.
Holy Crap, what a great play. It looked like Willie screw up big time and a few seconds later Endy Chavez comes up with a nearly impossible catch to not only steal the homer run but turns it into an inning ending double play.
Wow, Wow, Wow.
Now **that ** was a catch!
Had to be great when a Yankee Fanatic and Dodger Fanatic simul post on it about a Met.
I didn’t really have a favorite in this series until that happened. The teams seem reasonably well matched, both solid but ravaged by injury, yet still scrapping. And of course they’re just fighting to see who gets their ass kicked by Detroit.
But when Chavez made that catch, I decided I wanted the Mets to win, and get into the World Series. If the Cards win, that catch (and subsequent play) will fade in memory somewhat. It deserves to be immortalized as a galvanizing moment that kept the game in check and made a win possible.
That was one hell of a play.
That was probably the most spectacular play I’ve ever seen made in a playoff game, even beating Devon White’s catch in the 1992 Series. That was just astounding.
Man, is this a nailbiter or what?
Yadier Molina, of all people! Didn’t Bengie Molina provide some key, unexpected offense for the Angels a few postseasons back?
Well, balls.
Let’s see what happens, bottom of the 9th, down by 2, game 7. Can the Mets do it? Can Wainwright save the game?
Damn we got a good one tonight.
BTW: Marley, are you a Mets fan or a Yanks fan. I thought you were a Yankee fan, but I am not positive.
Valentin makes it very interesting.
Tying runs on, nobody out. God, I love this game!
^ Cardinals fan.
I literally cannot watch the bottom of the ninth. I am so on edge. 2 Mets on, no outs. Gah!
And damn Edmonds was ROBBED of that home run…but what a beautiful catch.
And we got our run.
This one game embodies everything I love about baseball.
Oh Floyd!
Floyd struck out looking.
Come on Reyes make this interesting!
Define “interesting.”
