Rough game to watch. Good for the Giants. HARD for the Phillies. I hope the Phillies can pull this playoff off. But. Chances are really running out quickly. Tomorrow is the first must win game of the season for the Phillies. We’ll see how they react. One for the ages.
I’m feeling pretty good with Lincecum, Sanchez, and Cain all waiting their turns. IT seems like it’s the Giants’ year right now…every move they make seems to be working out for them.
I went away on a business trip to Chicago on Monday only to watch the Yankees get bitchslapped by Lee (on the smallest tv in Stocks and Blondes, since apparently, a Blackhawks pre-season game is more important than an MLB playoff game). Last night, I watched them implode and Teix’s hamstring explode. The Yankees finally won a game while I was in the air today.
Finally, I can relax and watch the NL game in peace. But I HAVE CABLEVISION! I forgot that I can’t watch Fox, due to the contact dispute… Can anyone explain to me why this kind of crap only seems to happen to Cablevision?
I missed what appeared to be a classic game (if ESPN GameCast is correct). This sucks.
I did watch the fascinating “30 for 30” about Drazen Petrovic and Vlade Divacs. But still, Cablevision sucks!
The Phillies used Oswalt??? Can he still pitch tomorrow?
Suburban Plankton, I’d feel good, too. I would much rather be in your shoes! Great pitching and a 2 game cushion.
That sucks!
Halladay is pitching tomorrow. Oswalt wouldn’t throw until Game 6, which would be Saturday? He only threw the 9th tonight, so I suspect he’d be able to go. But I don’t think he’s going to get the chance.
Why were the Giants so excited? They still have to win one more against a very good team. Halladay beats you (which is likely) and, suddenly, 3-2 (like the AL series) doesn’t seem so absolute. Chill out guys and at least clinch the pennant before you make love on the mound. Look at the espn.com lead: it says “One giant step away.” Indeed.
They won a great game and took a commanding lead over the team that many observers favored to beat them, going in to this. I say whoop it up some.
Gotcha. I somehow forgot that they were still playing Game 4. It’s hard to believe that the Phils are in the same position as the Yanks were last night.
Walkoff win in game 4 of the NLCS to take a 3-1 lead and they can’t have a celebration on the mound?
The same celebration the Yankees had after destroying the Red Sox 19-8 (in Fenway) in game 3 of the 2004 ALCS? Sure. I didn’t claim they couldn’t celebrate (obviously they could); I [implied] they shouldn’t celebrate. I liken in to a defensive back in the NFL celebrating a big stop on 2nd down. Often they go wild. Heck, they got the opponent in a 3rd and 20. But sometimes the oppenent converts a 3rd and 20, and the celebration on the previous play is rendered moot. Earn something to celebrate before you celebrate, is all I’m saying.
I’m completely nonplussed by your attitude here.
During the regular season, walkoff wins result in the winning team mobbing the hero at the plate, and celebrating with a whole bunch of huddling and jumping around and yelling and screaming. Hell, it got so raucous this year that players actually ended up on the DL as a result of end-of-game celebrations.
I simply do not understand why you would begrudge or discourage a celebration by a team that’s just had a walk-off win to take a 3-1 lead in the LCS. Yes, they still have to win another game. Here’s a small piece of speculation on my part: the Giants players are well aware of this fact, and will not let a couple of minutes of exuberance distract them from the seriousness of the task ahead.
This is a non-issue, and i really can’t understand the position you’re taking.
And to be honest, being slightly intoxicated, I saw the end of the game and had to ask several people if the Giants just clinched. That looked like a clinching celebration.
Dude, c’mon, this was no mid-May walk-off celebration. As per my post above, I almost thought it was a World Series clinching celebration. I’m not begrudging anybody of anything; that is (incorrect) presumption on your part. But why celebrate solving a math problem when you’ve only solved part of it?
And, for the record, I’m nonplussed by your use of the word nonplussed.
Does it prohibit or even hinder your abiltiy to solve the rest of the problem?* Probably not. But it sure makes you look like an ass if you get the problem wrong.
*Roy Hallady and Cole Hamels hinder your ability to solve the rest of the problem.
The guys on ESPN (who all picked the Phillies) commented on how composed Buster Posey was after the game. He was cool as ice and made it clear they know there is a tough task ahead with the Phillies big 3.
For how calm the guy is, it is hard to believe he is a rookie catcher leading the NL in hits in the playoffs. I think your intoxication is affecting your interpretation of the celebration.
So do I; that’s why I reported it.
That the ESPN analysts (experts) found Posey’s non-reaction notable is notable.
As an aside, man it was depressing seeing Will Clark as an old man.
Let me clarify: I think my intoxication affected my knowledge of the series count, not my appraisal of the post-game celebration.
As I mentioned several pages back, the Giants lead the league in grounding into double plays.
I think that was the first time this year, that with runners on 1st and 3rd and 1 out, that they didn’t hit into a DP. That’s worth celebrating right there.
Interesting questions. I would definitely push Teixeira to fifth. Jeter probably starts the season at leadoff because he’s Jeter. He had an off year this year and Gardner actually had better on base and slugging numbers in 2010. I expect Jeter to bounce back, but if he starts slowly maybe they’ll talk him into hitting second and put Gardner at the top. It’s not like Jeter is going to be batting seventh when he’s likely to get his 3,000th hit in June.
