The game in Atlanta started at 7:30 PM local time. I think that’s borderline late as it is.
If we’re talking about closers throwing multiple innings, I’d like to mention a guy named Brian Wilson. I’m sure I’m not the only Giants fan who was hoping just a *teeny *bit so see him trot out to start the 7th tonight…
OK, maybe not…but I guarantee he would’ve taken the ball if it’d been given to him.
I don’t care if he’s leading the league in saves…he gives me a heart attack every time. But that was true of Robb Nen, and Rod Beck…
That has nothing to do with the pitcher…that’s just life as a Giants fan.
Peter Moylan has an interesting pitching line tonight:
0.0 IP
0 H
0 R
0 ER
0 BB
0 K
0 HB
0 WP
0 B
Unusual, yes? Given that the rules require you to face at least one batter. But look at his pitching line from Game 3:
0.0 IP
0 H
0 R
0 ER
0 BB
0 K
0 HB
0 WP
0 B
This is what happens when your defense can’t defend.
OK…maybe it has a *little *to do with the pitcher
Aw, who cares…
GIANTS WIN!!! Bring on the Phillies!
[clutches chest]This is the big one! I’m comin’ Elizabeth!!!

You might want to refill that nitroglycerin prescription…there’s at least four more games coming up that’re gonna be just like this one…
…and the last one, and the one before that, and the one before that, and the one before that.
Can I get some oxygen over here?

Couple of complaints about your stats though. The ERA+ is not the only measurement of good pitching I would hope. Even if it were, Gossage and Fingers had how many multi-inning saves vs. being asked to come in clean of 3 outs in the 9th?
Er, did I not give them credit for, you know, pitching a lot more? That’s what you get for more-than-one-inning saves (though I doubt either pitcher actually racked up very many 3-inning jobs.)
In general league ERA was significantly lower for that pair and thus separating them from the pack would be a tougher achievement I believe.
There is some truth to this, but the difference with Wagner is quite extreme. Wagner has been a phenomenally effective pitcher. If his glory years had been in New York or Boston the ESPN guys would be dropping his name every two minutes.
I’d agree, though, that Rivera is on a totally different level. He is the greatest relief pitcher of all time, full stop.
Fair enough and the Braves Lose! Hurray.
It was a good series between the Braves and the Giants. The Braves surprised me with how close they were able to make it. The pitching really did well. It’s impressive that the Giants were able to punch through those starters and take two at Turner Field after the excellent season the Braves had there.
I enjoyed the crowd chanting Cox’s name at the end of the game, and the applause he received from Bochy and the Giants as he came out to give a curtain call. That was a classy response from both the Atlanta fans and the Giants.
Now, the NLCS starts. It’s going to be tough for either team to score any runs on Saturday with Linceum vs. Halliday and thereafter in each game in the series it will be tough. As a Phillies fan I am picking the Phillies to win the series. But, I can’t say I am confident with the choice. The bats are cold. The Reds’ starting pitching isn’t as good as the Giants, and the Phillies were only able to come up with a handful of extra base hits. And, more unearned runs than earned. On a good note I feel like even though the Phillies didn’t get a lot of big hits against the Reds they did hit a lot of balls hard right at people, and they put in good productive at bats. If they can keep that up, hopefully balls will start to drop in for hits.
I think it will be a good series with excited effusive fans at each park.
Congratulations to the Giants and their fans, good series. Good luck.
Bring the Giants. BRING THEM!! They’ve got a whole four runs to score over 4 games.
As a Phillies Phan, I’m bleeding rematch with that New York team. Who are they again? The Overpaids?? I always forget. No wait, it’s the Fat Sabbathia Lovers. That’s them.

I wouldn’t be surprised. Both teams have incredible pitching; there could be more than one 1-0 game. But the Phillies at least show the potential for hitting. I think every freakin’ bat in the Giants lineup is in a slump right now; and even if they weren’t, they don’t exactly remind anyone of Murderer’s Row.
It breaks my heart to say so, but Phils in 6. Maybe 5.

Relax, pricciar, after a week off, even a hot streak would be cooled off… these team are both starting from scratch, and I like the Phil’s chances…
I’ll tell you this:
Halladay vs. Lincecum.
It’s got to be the best pitching matchup in years. I won’t miss a pitch. I enjoy watching major league batters look every bit as helpless up there as I would look.

This is exactly the time the baseball gods will unleash an unexpected slugfest.

You sound like a Philly fan. All sour grapes. Just be happy that the baseball gods handed you Halladay and Oswalt, so that you have a chance this year. These 2 players have provided more class to your city than every athlete in the history of your city combined. Too bad you can’t import better fans as well.
All MLB players are overpaid. The Yankees are just more overpaid. And they deserve it!

I understand the gist, there may be a better way of communicating the point… as it stands, this post puts out pretty sweeping generalizations, and is paradoxically flirting with “class” issues by throwing an entire city, fandom, and collective history of professional athletes under the bus… bring this up in the Pit and we can talk…

WTF? That was uncalled for. I’ve lived in and around Philly all of my life and I can’t understand the vitriol towards us. Sure, we have our fair share of drooling cro-mags, but so does every city. This is a great town! There are interesting, intelligent and nice people here, too. It’s also a sports town with very passionate fans. I find your assessment of my fair city insulting and uninformed.
