I am not the person that would normally do this and on some level I feel embarrassed, but… I am normally a big lurker. As you can properly see, in the six odd months I have been here, I have lurked more then I have posted, but recently I have started posting more and I think I have started to get into the swing of things and gotten into the groove of SDMB.
I don’t have a great story, it is just that I am in between jobs at the moment, and quiet seriously I am having to watch every dollar that goes in and out of my pocket. But I am willing to offer this promise, if somebody pays for me now, I am more then will to promise in stone to pay it forward for next year, either pay for them or pay for somebody else. Obviously while nothing is garunteed in life, I do feel I would have a job by then and thus afford to do it for next year.
Hi. I’ve got the five buck, but no functioning credit cards and I’m not thrilled with the idea of PayPal being able to stick its little fingers into my checking account.
If someone would be willing to forward a payment and subscribe me, I’d be grateful. Please drop me an e-mail and let me know if you want me to send the five in cash, check, money order or barter goods.
I’d like to sponsor up to four people who feel they can’t afford the subscription because they’re spending all their $$ on kids with medical problems. Been there, done that, would like to pass it on.
I have emailed lavenderviolet and Saint Sparky offering to provide a wolfstu-brand SDMB Scholarship. If anyone else also has, well, only one of us can.
I’ve offered three. If it works out with these two, I’ve still got one left. Read my post above, then email me if you’d like to be the one.
To be clear, I only posted their names so other sponsors woudl know which posts in this thread were taken care of. I still stand by my promise of anonymity if you wish it.
Since I am just a poor college student I am only able to afford my subscription and 1-2 others. Like many other’s out there I would like to put the following stipulation on my offer: the user must be a fellow college student. Other than that I thought I’d borrow from wolfstu’s “Scholarship Rules.”
You don’t have to be a member of the SDMB yet. If you’re a longtime lurker and want to join, I’ll sponsor that too, but sign up under the existing system before the deadline and I’ll pay for your ‘Charter Membership’ just as I would an existing member. (I can’t afford to pay for $14.95 memberships)
This is not for people who will not pay. This is for people who cannot pay. I’m imagining the two scenarios described above, but if you think your situation fits, by all means, request one of the two slots I can offer.
I guess I will have to ask what your screenname is, so I can do the registering. I won’t post it here, though, so that you can remain anonymous.
If you want to use this offer, you’ve got to email me well before the April 21st deadline. I would like to at least verify that you are indeed a college student and will ask that you email me using your .edu email address if possible. If for some reason you cannot just let me know in your email. On that note you can email me at jrkeipp@ilstu.edu.
Just to clarify: the READER will not accept checks, it’s primarily a clerical and administrative cost. And the READER does not want to be socked with NSF charges: there would surely be some jokers out there who are banned and bear and grudge who would pull all sorts of crapola.
Similary, the Mods are NOT going to run an “official” scholarship fund. We believe the number of people who really need help is small. There will be a few people who really can’t afford the $5.T here will be a few others who don’t have credit cards and can’t set up PayPal. But what we’ve seen so far indicates that the numbers are very small.
OTOH, the number of people offering to pay for others is large. We don’t want to set up a fancy “scholarship” system that collects way more money than we need. Just from reading this thread, I suspect we’d collect around 50 times more than we need. In short, we conclude that it’s better to let individuals handle this one-on-one. (That will probably reduce the freeloader effort, too – people who can afford it but think they can cheat a scholarship fund, where they might not want to deceive an actual other member.)
So, it’s really a case of: If you need help, read through this thread, and find someone who’s offered, and ask them.
As I stated in the original thread, I am willing to help out both with a few sponsorship subscriptions, and with handing the subscriptions for those who don’t have/can’t use PayPal/CC. Just email me and we’ll work it out.
I agree with RNATB, Uncommon Sense and wolfstu on the ‘rules of sponsorship’. I’ll pay for as many as I can afford, and help all those who can pay but don’t have a way to, or have reservations about giving out personal info. I do ask that anyone that emails me please put SDMB in the subject line; the email addy in my profile has morphed into a spam getting acct, so I only use it to catch the spam and for those infrequent SDMB uses.
purrplebear, happy to help out when I can…
I am willing to sponsor a non-zero number of people who cannot afford the cost of membership; on a first-come, first-served basis. Email me at mcaricofe@consultant.com (please put ‘SDMB sub’ in the subject line)-- and I will reply to all as to whether you are being paid for, or that I have reached my limit.
I am also willing to act as conduit for those unable/unwilling to pay online; I also am willing to help non-US people with payments (to the best of my ability).
I can afford the fee - in NZ dollars it’s a little under $10, I think, so it means I don’t go see a movie next week. The thing is, I don’t have a credit card, and I’m very hesitant about getting one. So if there’s any Kiwi Dopers out there who are subscribing, could you do me too, and I’ll mail you the money, plus a token of my appreciation - a particularly cool book, or something.
