I’m a gay man who, on occasion, views gay porn magazines. Obviously not all the models appeal to me, but even for the ones who don’t, I can still sense the sexuality that’s being portrayed.
But when I see male models intended for a female audience, there’s usually something missing, I rarely consider these guys hot. Usually they seem kind of silly, especially when there are props involved. And I’ve also noticed that these guys are, on average, less endowed than the gay models.
Is there some fundamental difference between what gay men and straight women consider exciting?
I’ve often heard straight women say that they don’t think the male models are very attractive either. In fact, I have heard that many straight women who like porn prefer gay male porn over that which is targeted at straight women. So it might just be that the porn industry is clueless when it comes to what women want.
Models for gay porn magazines tend to be ultra-buff with less than 10 % body fat, well-endowed and tumescent, and they are posed staring at the camera, so it looks as if they are communicating directly with the reader.
The models in Playgirl are not as sexually threatening, they are posed looking away from the camera, and they usually don’t have erections.
You may notice that gay porn models and models in muscle magazines like Men’s Physiques and Men’s Workout are posed the same way, although the guys in the muscle mags have shorts on. This further demonstrates my theory that muscle mags are thinly disguised gay spank mags for areas where explicit porn is unavailable.
You’re going on the assumption that Playgirl is intended for a female audience. They’ve been notorious…okay, maybe not notorious, but Michael Musto’s written about it several times - they won’t reveal what percentage of their readership is male. It’s less overtly sexual and a bit more erotic. Fewer boners, to be specific. More props - “I just happened to be barbecuing wearing only an apron”.
There’s a fair amount of crossover between those models. I’m not too into porn so I don’t know anyone’s name, but some of those “Workout - For One Muscle Only” models are porn actors, aren’t they?
