OK, honest critique of the sculpture itself?
Is it meant to be realistic? Because honestly, it looks like it was made by someone who has only heard a rough description of the thing.
Or is it meant to be stylised? Because it doesn’t look like it’s trying for that.
Wonder if his mother is the real possessive type? Maybe his failure to escape is symbolic.
A friend of mine is an artist from (and now back in) Mali. He gave me this piece.(ebony carving) I think of it as “feminine”.
Was it shaved before, or did that take place as part of the rescue?
