March Madness 2022

Duke v UNC 2.0

Should be a great game.

Ironic UNC just beat Duke on March 5.

This will be the very first time Duke and UNC have ever met in the NCAA men’s tournament.

Couldn’t script this any better. Coach K’s final tourney, playing Carolina in the Final Four.

:eyes: I’m sixty and just now learning the schools are 10 miles apart? Somehow I never made that connection. I knew it was an in-state rivalry like Alabama-Auburn football.

I was shocked to learn they’d somehow never met in the tournament before.

I know… crazy, right? Like 15 seed Saint Peter’s making it to the Elite Eight, or Iowa State making the Sweet 16 after winning only two games last year. This tournament’s been full of wacky surprises.

I don’t find that so surprising. They have never been, and probably never will be, placed in the same regional. Thus, for them to meet in the tourney, they would both have to make the Final Four. That’s happened only once before, in 1991. UNC lost to Kansas in the semis, while Duke won their semi-final game and then defeated Kansas in the final.

Villanova v Kansas at 5 central TBS

Duke v UNC at 7:45 central

Should be a good evening of basketball.

Kansas Jayhawks are going to the championship game!

Interesting fact they mentioned near the end of the game: since Kansas last won in 2008, the other three Final Four teams have each won two championships!

This was the first Final Four in which all four teams have won multiple national championships.

Also, Kansas beat Nova in the Round of 16 in 2008, en route to the title. Nova beat Kansas in the Round of 8 in 2016, and in the Final Four in 2018, both of which ended in Villanova winning the championship.

Duke v UNC is very close. Duke has a 3 point lead at the half.

Too close to call.

Neither team shooting very well. Combined 5-25 3-pointers.

But another fun game to watch.

And both teams heating up down the stretch. One heckuva fun game to watch.

Duke leads by 1 with 1:18 left.

Wow. UNC pulls it off. Coach K’s career is over.

Should be a good game Monday night.

I wonder who Roy Williams will be rooting for on Monday night? :stuck_out_tongue:

Ha! (For those who don’t know, he’s coached both Kansas and North Carolina).

It would be nice if the Jayhawks avenged this exciting 1957 loss (from Wikipedia):

With their fixation on Chamberlain, the Jayhawks shot only 27% from the field, as opposed to 64% of the Tar Heels, and trailed 22–29 at halftime.[29] Later, North Carolina led 40–37 with 10 minutes to go and stalled the game, as they passed the ball around without any intention of scoring a basket. After several Tar Heel turnovers, the game was tied at 46 at the end of regulation.[29] Each team scored two points in the first overtime, while Kansas froze the ball in return, keeping the game tied at 48, in the second overtime. In the third overtime, the Tar Heels scored two consecutive baskets, but Chamberlain executed a three-point play, leaving KU trailing 52–51. After King scored a basket, Kansas was ahead by one point; Tar Heel Joe Quigg was fouled on a drive with 10 seconds remaining and made his two foul shots. For the final play, Harp called for Ron Loneski to pass the ball into Chamberlain in the low post, but the pass was intercepted and the Tar Heels won the game. Despite the loss, Chamberlain, who scored 23 points and 14 rebounds,[29] was elected the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four.[5] Cherry comments that this loss was a watershed in Chamberlain’s life because it was the first time that his team lost despite him putting up impressive individual basketball statistics. He later admitted that this loss was the most painful of his life.

For those who are too young to remember college basketball before the shot clock… OMG it was so booooring when a team got a lead then just stalled to try to run out the clock. The shot clock was a real game changer.

Even with no shot clock and no 3-point line: shooting 64% and only 29 points is crazy.

All the Duke players immediately just left the court leaving Coach K basically out there by himself at the end of the game. Super classy.
