March of The Penguins - SDMB Pokertropolis Fourth Quarter, 2005

I might also. No kid. Peace on earth and in my home. Hallelujah. Oops, DISTOL? Oh well.

Ah, who am I kidding? It’s a usual Friday night and I haven’t a life. Therefore I’ll probably be there. Maybe dps or kram/krum/krabopple will be there too evil

I might try the .99 tournament tonight. My luck seems to have turned; I’ve been playing the .25/.50 tables and usually finish in the black.

And I bought a book on how to play poker.

RA, you need to get back in our games. You are ahead of half the pack, hell, look at Yeti compared to last quarter. And he’s been winning real money tournaments since then. Looking at his standings this quarter, you’d thing the guy had never heard of poker

Dang it.

Sorry, you were ahead of about half the pack. I just remember you being ahead of me (you still are!), and I was in about the middle. But I’m dropping like a rock, we’re in the bottom third now. Still, I’ll be there next time with blood in my eye.

I lost a spot last night and I didn’t even play.

But it wasn’t the standings that were driving me nuts; it was just sitting there and never having a hand that was worth playing. The pocket cards weren’t any worse than I’d expect, but there was just nothing after that. I could go an entire night, even past the first break, and maybe flop one pair the whole time. For five weeks. Absolutely brutal.

And you can probably all read me like a book by now.

I’ll be back, but I’ve just got to step away for a while.

Poker? With a stick? No? Poker? Cards? What’s that? You mean my quad 9s beat your Aces full of Kings? What, I won? What did I win? Money? How much? $136? You’re kidding! You’re not? But I’m dead last in the SDMB tournament standings! I suck big suck-outs! I’m the laughing stock of the Dope! Whaddya mean I won? How long have I been playing? I didn’t know I was playing at all! I thought I was being played!

It’s been that kind of month.

Are you saying you won a bad beat pot, Yeti?

Robot_Arm, I think you should come back, I have found this game to be remarkably easy…at least against this bunch.

Yeah RA. How do you think we feel, getting beat by GO? Talk about ego busting! :stuck_out_tongue:

Hey Duke, I see you’re in for the tourney, I’ll catch you on AIM in a bit.

I’m in too.

What the hey, I’m in too. I just managed to win another $100 playing blackjack. (I’ve got to get my money out of there before I do something stupid with it.)

I’ll. Be. Damned.

Made the final table. Finished 8th. Out of 195.

Well, that’s a sight better than I did…

Went to Party and flush with success from the night before, lost $25 right off on the ol’ boat vs quads. Then went on to finish $40 up for the night.

I’ve about decided that tournaments just aren’t for me, but I do a lot better at the ring games. Finished up $86 last night, bought in with $25, left with $111. On top of the last couple of winning excursions, I’ve really turned that forgotten $15 around. I bought into Party with $100 I transferred from PokerTropolis, winnings from limit ring games there. At that time, PT had basically no NL action. In just a couple of visits to Party, I’d lost $85 of my $100, plus the $30 sign up bonus. Now I’m back in the black, even got my $20 loan from Yeti back in my stack (but I’m not going to transfer any more $$ back to PT unless I really need to).

Seems like everyone is finding their nitch (or fish) online…glad to see it! Go Dopers!

I’m not so sure… “I have met the fish, and he is me!” was my rallying cry at first. The thing that I hadn’t reckoned was that a $1 limit game was a whole different animal than a $1 NL game. I busted into the $1 NL right off the bat and got my ass handed to me. This after a pretty good level of success at $1 limit, but on a different site.

I learned a few things about my game after watching some of the more successful players at my tables and used this to turn my game around. I’m still not turned around enough to go back to the $1 tables, and I might lose my ass tomorrow, but at least I feel a lot more confident. I also once again have more $$ than I started with, that was really grating on me.

Yeah, it takes quite different skills to play different games. I started with play money NL Hold 'em, got clobbered. Went to 7-stud (which I had played before), finally found success. Went back to NL Hold 'em, finally found success. Went to real money NL Hold 'em, got clobbered. Went to Limit Hold 'em, got clobbered, finallly found success. Went back to NL, and I’m finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. Meanwhile, tried NL tourneys, got clobbered, finally making some headway there. (In fact, having won a couple of $1 5 TT’s and placing in the money pretty often, I probably should focus my attention there.)

Overall, I’m probably down $250, so in another 2 years I may be back even. :frowning:

p.s. I think the intensely competitive nature of our weekly games is making us all better players. Hurray for us!

Good point. You can learn a lot by watching good players. I’m going to start pestering people over AIM when I want to watch somebody in action. Or we could make an announcement to the group over AIM when we are involved in a game or tourney and don’t mind spectators.

That’s what prompted me to take my last 15 and make another stab at poker. I am doing pretty poorly in our tournaments lately and wanted to try to get some more play in hopes of improving my standings here. I just stopped playing except for our game. A couple of pitiful finishes in the .99 PT tourneys and I went back to the ring games.

No doubt about it, between the competition in our tournaments and the desire to better my play in hopes of doing better in our tournaments, I like to think my game has improved.

Exactly. One way or another, we are finding our nitches. I owe it all to my Doper brethren and sistren!
