Marie Osmond: So what if my oldest daughter is gay

Story here.

I think that Mormon Marie might have learned some lessons about love and tolerance when it applies directly to you and yours.

Well cool. Would be nice if she’d do a few public service announcements to counteract her church’s campaign of intolerance. I mean, she doesn’t have to, but I’d say the Osmond family is probably the most well-known group of Mormons. And if they tithe, then a significant amount of Osmond money helped pay for that campaign of intolerance. So a message of love and acceptance would be helpful.

She publicly stated that she believes gays should have the right to marry and that her view of her faith is that Christ loves everyone. Her statement was unambiguously free of judgment and long on tolerance. What else does she need to do, exactly, to make you happy? It’s not Marie Osmond’s job to personally take on a whole church.

She doesn’t have to launch a massive, well-funded campaign, but if an entity that you are aligned with and that you presumably help finance starts doing something that you disagree with, you have a moral responsibility to try to counteract it. Bluntly, I would have been more impressed by this news before last November 4th.

There’s a young gay Mormon who’s not on a reality show? That is weird.

How do you know she isn’t?

Quite probably this single comment will get more play than the massively funded LDS anti gay campaign. Also after observing Marie Osmond over the years, I do believe this will not be her only comment on the matter. She seems to rarely make single comments.

She’s probably about to launch a gay marriage doll line.

Off topic, but something I found a bit cheesy is that she recently released her memoirs and in the middle of the book is a tear-out membership card for Nutrisystem. While I know she’s a spokesperson for them and credits them with weight loss, most books don’t have product ads.

I wonder if the rest of the Osmond clan will come out in support. (If they do then that alone could swing the elections for north Utah.)

I’ve mentioned before the oddity of the Osmond gender disparity- they seem to produce 8 males per female. Now that Marie (the only girl in a family of 10) has produced a girl who’s a lesbian they’ll probably stop XX productions altogether.

I’m more surprised that she’s Mormon. I thought I remember seeing her her Texas as a kid, singing in some kind of country western/rodeo inspired entertainment.

Why would her singing in country wester/rodeo inspired entertainment in Texas be at odds with her Mormon faith?

Because, silly, Mormons are from Utah – Baptists are from Texas!

She’s a little bit country.

No, and she doesn’t sound very mormon-y, either. Given her rather casual “God said to be married and be productive with your children and, you know, replenish the earth or whatever.” comment, maybe the mormon thing is just a cultural piece of her past that still hangs on.

Oooh! Oooh! I am SO getting one for my MIL’s collection. If I can get through the oh-so-creepy process of shopping for it!

Do you think they’ll ramp up to XXX productions? I would think there’s more money in hardcore…

Actually, Jessica (the lesbian) is adopted. Marie has three biological children – sons Stephen and Matthew, plus daughter Rachael. Besides Jessica, there are four other adoptees – Michael, Brandon, Brianna, and Abigail.

Also, Marie has “only” eight brothers. Virl and Tom (both deaf) never joined Alan, Wayne, Merrill, Jay, Donny, and Jimmy in the family musical act.

Well, Marie is being a supportive mother, and she does love her daughter. This daughter is not her biological child, however; she’s adopted. So technically the Osmond clan’s invincibility stands, I guess. Also, Marie and her second husband are divorcing - she’s had two Temple marriages, which is very unusual. It apparently takes a special dispensation to get a Temple divorce. I wonder if that is like how an annulment works in the Catholic church? ducks I do cheer Marie for her stance, though.

It’s not at odds so much as just odd. I don’t think of Mormons as being rodeo folk in the same way that I don’t think of NYC metrosexuals or Portland hippies as being rodeo folk.

So if gay marriage is legalized in Utah does that mean Marie’s daughter can have more than one wife? Or does it depend on where the storm gathers?

Or winning an Oscar for writing an awesome movie about a gay icon!

I said good on Marie for being public about this and not treating her daughter like something that must be hidden. As for “this should’ve happened before November 4th” it’s very likely that Jessica wasn’t exactly interested in being a political prop for anyone to fight over. She’s a private person whose mother happens to be a celebrity, that doesn’t obligate her to put herself out on the chopping block for speculation and scorn and everything else that would’ve come along if Marie had done the “I’m a Mormon with a gay kid and Prop 8 is wrong” thing.
