Right. She sang “I’m a little bit country” and Donny sang “I’m a little bit rock and roll” and **Tokyo Player probably figured out that Marie was just as much “country” as Donny was “rock and roll”.
Actually, the best description I saw was “Dancing” “With” the “Stars”.
Your experience coincides nicely with mine! I (along with my friends) thought that Marie was very pretty back in the 1970s – I must admit, though, that I have not really thought about her in ages. I did not know that she was on “Dancing with the Stars” until just the other day.
And if she converts then the adoption agency, Mutts and Mormons, will take them back, and Marie doesn’t have a talkshow anymore to fight it.
I remember a couple of years ago she was touring in The Sound of Music. I remember wondering if the lyrics had changed to How Do You Solve a Problem Like Hot Flashes.
I was born in '82 and have been aware of her since childhood through general pop culture knowledge and seriously doubt I’m in the minority in that, even in my age range.
Clarification. when I was a 13, it was the Osmond Brothers. I’m two years younger than Marie, and not into country so I wasn’t aware of her country roots. I looked it up and the Donny and Marie show started in '76, when I was a cynical 15-year-old, and never watched the show.
Because the Osmonds are Mormon, then there was pressure from the establishment to like them, which meant that no one did, or no one could admit to it, even if they did. As for lusting after her, because she was Mormon, it would be like wanting to kiss your cousin.
At that time, everyone was lusting after the trio on Charlie’s Angles.
Exactly!
Wow, you learn something new about Mormonism every day.
Now that makes perfect sense.
Hey, I liked the all the angels (especially Kate Jackson as Sabrina Duncan), Teresa Graves of “Get Christie Love!”, Lindsay Wagner as the Bionic Woman, and I especially liked Lynda Carter as Wonder Woman and Olivia Newton-John! There were many others – but Marie was very cute! She was one of many crushes that I had…
I got to say, growing up Mormon in that era, I felt no institutional pressure to like them. Maybe I wasn’t running in the same circles as TokyoPlayer.
I do like the Osmonds, though, for one main reason - I had a cousin with down’s syndrome who lived down the street from one of the Osmonds. As a 12 year old girl with the mental development of a 3 year old (at best) being raised by a single mom, she would sometimes strip down to her underwear or less and run around (or ride her oversized tricycle around) the community. When that happened, the Osmonds (who knew her mother’s struggle and had children/siblings with disabilities) always would take my cousin off the street and give her milk and cookies until her mom could be found. My aunt (second cousin once removed, actually) made it through those years in part because of anonymous donations by local community members. Later, she found out that a large portion of those donations came from the Osmonds. From my experience, the Osmonds are just good people.
Hey, that is a great story! Thanks for sharing.
