Marilyn Monroe – Suicide or Cover-up?

Hello. If you could give me your brief opinion, it would be much appreciated. I’m writing a paper for my Philosophy class at UVM with the focus being Marilyn Monroe’s death…which is listed as a “suicide” but many believe to have been a cover-up. I’ve been doing a lot of research on the topic i.e. collecting books, articles (this month’s Playboy actually had a great in-depth look at the whole story, including transcripts written by her to her psychiatrist…as did the LA Times back in August) films, etc…but I also thought to ask specific people throughout the net about their thoughts on the case.

Hopefully this topic won’t lead to too much flaming etc. And please be nice to the newbie! Like I said, any info would be great.

Thanks and think snow!

Mike M.

Nice choice for a topic. I mean, if you’re gonna spend some time perusing old pictures…(heh)

Other than the wise-ass remark, I got nothin, as I’ve never given the matter any thought.

You’re doing the research; what do you think?

I have no opinion because neither would despise me. OT1H, she was a major potential embarassment to some completely ruthless men (two of whom had a brother-in-law who lived next door) and there were some oddities the night she died (the lack of vomit, the maid doing laundry when the police entered). OTOH, she was psychotic, drug dependent and had a major depressive streak, and the maid could have been doing something to keep busy (many people don’t act rational during times of stress). I wouldn’t be astonished if she was offed or if she just killed herself.

You know it’s often seemed to me that she lived her life like a candle in the wind. I know for a fact she danced with Capote, and he was a flamer who staggered a lot, which is sort of like a candle in the wind right there.

I guess the first question is “killed why, and covered up by whom?” And those aren’t small hurdles, but go ahead and let us know what you’re thinking.

What I want to know is how this relates to a Philosophy class.

Because this makes it possible to get a grade for reading Playboy. For the articles, 'natch.

I’m a big fan of Occam’s razor. She had enough turmoil in her personal life that suicide requires no stretch of the imagination. On the other hand, to swallow all the other “evidence” requires a great deal of stretch.

Marilyn was said to be really good at swallowing.

Nothing to contribute, but just wanted to say “hey” to another Burlingtonian and UVM-er (well, I’m not there anymore, but still).

Who’s your prof?

IIRC, her death came within a few days of her relationship with Kennedy being released by Dorothy Kilgallen (who, herself, died mysteriously - a supposed suicide). The timing is too clean. DK had previously stated she would not release the info regarding the affair, but it is supposed she had heavy debt and had to spill the beans for the $$ or she herself was being blackmailed.

Personally, I believe Marilyn was goaded into suicide. While she was incredibly intelligent, she was also notoriously dumb when it came to personal matters. I think that when the caca hit the fan she may have been told to disappear. Knowing what it took for her to get where she was and knowing that she was on a downward spiral anyways, she chose to absent herself completely.

But that’s just my .02C (I’m more interested in the Dorothy Kilgallen murder/suicide)

Isn’t it possible that she was a little too lax about following the recommended dose?

She had been unstable and depressed for years. They may have covered up who was there or who she called after she took pills, but there’s no need to dig deep for another person directly involved.

That’s pretty much on target. I’ve read just about everything published on her, ad the evidence points to an impulsive cry-for-help suicide (phone in hand) that no one caught in time.

If every woman who may have slept with JFK was bumped off, the death toll from Vietnam would have paled in comparison.

There is a serious flaw in your presumptions. Accidental OD due to reckless drug abuse seems very likely to me.

Who says she’s dead?

or maybe the maid cleaned up the vomit and washed to sheets.

My Take: Marilyn Accidentally overdosed (1). Her housekeeper discovered this about midnight and called her Doctor - either her personal Physician or her Psychiatrist (probably the former). This Doctor had negligently prescribed drugs w/o consultation (or perhaps Marilyn didn’t tell him she was seeing the Psychiatirst and/or that he had prescribed anything). (2) Whatever, he had prescribed the barbiturates that killed '62’s Jessica Simpson/Jlo/Lindsay Lohan rolled into one. He cleaned the scene and may have made some calls. About 4:30 AM he told the House keeper to call the police. (3) A Conspiracy Theory is born.

(1) She had two previous attempts and had called friends to get her to the Hospital. She was abusing prescription drugs heavily at the time of her death.

(2) Her Lawyer Milton Rudin claimed that [Her Physician] said something very important the night of Marilyn’s death: " God damn it! Hy {her Psychiatrist] gave her a prescription I didn’t know about!" In any event her Doctor gave her a heavy dose of chloral hydrate the evening of her death and Marilyn had been taking Nembutal capsules throughout the day – both prescribed and - IANADr. – apparently a huge nono that killed her.

(3) The first cop to respond found her Doctor, Psychiatrist and Housekeeper already at the scene – giving the basics of the above timeline claiming 20th Century Fox PR Department wouldn’t let them announce the death - which seems to be untrue
