Listen for the noises that occur when you’re running over the rows. It’s a certain combination of top and bottom row.
Are you talking about the Fortress? The one with two sides that you can go between through doors? If so, then it’s not very maze-like. You just have to pick the right door. The door you want is at the very end (right side) of the level, and it only appears when you hit a P-switch. In fact, I think two doors appear, and you want the one further to the right.

It frightens me that I can remember either of these off the top of my head.

Hmmm. Was that the one with the water? If so, I never found out how to get through it, but I did solve the game, so I must have used a P-wing or a cloud to bypass that level.
I love the theme music when you get into the “hell” area.
