So the recent Blue Shell thread got me thinking: why don’t we get some online SDMB action rocking here? As perhaps the one Wii game with a stellar online interface, it’d almost be a shame not to. Plus it seems quite a few SDMB members are actually playing this game. Who knows, if this takes off, maybe we can schedule the occasional meet-up/friendly tournament.
To find your friend code, start Mario Kart Wii, choose a file, and click either Nintendo Wifi in the bottom-left. After logging on, click “Friends” and you’ll spot your Friend Code number beneath your Mii at the bottom of the screen.
I should also add that, for those unfamiliar to Nintendo Wifi, both people must register the other in order to play against one another. So not only will you have to register my Friend Code, but I’ll have to register yours as well. You can register a number from the same screen you found your Friend Code.
If Mario Kart Wii has a"stellar interface", I’d like to see what you’d think of any number of games with a vastly superior multiplayer party interface.
I’d supply my Friend Code, but it’s an exercise in futility. I don’t play the game anymore.
True, but when it’s not a matter of opinion, but a matter of design, that point becomes moot. Is Mario Kart Wii widely played online anymore? I’m genuinely curious about this.
Of course it is LOUNE. Do people still play Halo 3 online?
And you’re not curious, you’re just trying to slam the Wii, again.
I may be an annoying Wii booster to some, but jumping in to every Wii thread to boast about how you never play your Wii anymore is getting tiring. It’s actually very similar to those jackholes who invade TV threads and proclaim how stupid TV is and how they don’t even own one.
Not necessarily. Is it still popular? I suppose that’s the question I should have asked.
Also, I’ve been playing it a little more. Mario Galaxy isn’t too bad at all.
But no, seriously. Where would you go to find out how often games are played online on the Wii and what the popular titles are? Such lists exist for Live, but do they also exist for the Wii?
FYI: I have interest in Boom Blox. I’m looking into grabbing it.
Again, asking if Mario Kart Wii (the most popular game on the Wii) is still popular is as stupid a question as asking is Halo 3 still popular on the 360.
Oh, and those lists of “Most Popular” Xbox games that Major Nelson puts out? They’re meaningless. They’re creating by counting the number of people that play a game in a given month. Not how many minutes they play, not whether or not they play online, but just if they play.
If tomorrow, every Xbox 360 owner booted up SpongeBob SquarePants in Atlantis and immediately turned the system off, it would be the most popular Xbox 360 game of January.
But if you’re really interested in numbers, the Nintendo Channel on the Wii shows how many times each game has been booted up and for how many minutes its been played (of Nintendo Channel users that is). It’s very interesting to kill 15 minutes or an hour with.
Justin_Bailey, let’s just ignore him. He’s derailed this thread enough. So, what’s your friend code? With a username like that, how can I not want to race you? =P
I’ll have to check that out. I think it stands to reason that if the game is booted up, it’s going to get played (for the most part). Major Nelson’s measurements aren’t 100% accurate, but it’s good enough.
Ok, I hope I’ve established myself as enough of a Wii lover and Mario Kart lover that you’ll take this question seriously from me: can you please explain the “stellar online interface” comment? I found it awful and pointless the 2 times I played online with random people, and a zen-like test of my ability not to throw the wiimote through the television screen the one time I tried to play with a friend.
(It finally worked after close to an hour of coordinating our efforts on the phone, and then we were both bored within 20 minutes or so.)
You know, I would prefer it if we didn’t have this discussion here as it has nothing to do with my OP. I’m going to post this one response to appease both you and LOUNE (and anyone else who may be curious) and invite you to either respond to me via PM or open a new thread, if you wish to continue this discussion, which I would very much appreciate.
Anyways, odds are the problem you experienced was with one of your routers, as opposed to a problem with Nintendo’s server. I base this on people I’ve heard of who who have experienced similar problems, as well as my experience handling wifi support while working for Nintendo. I have raced hundreds of races and have not experienced any connection problems, aside from a minute or two delay the day after Christmas.
At any rate, Mario Kart Wii’s online interface is stellar because it does what I want it do in an extremely intuitive and quick way. It tosses me into a race almost instantly, uses an intelligent method of selecting a course (giving everyone a fair chance of racing on their preferred choice) and constantly brings in new players as others drop out, ensuring the races are typically full. In addition, there is virtually no discernible lag (something I can’t say for many 360 games). It also has some neat touches, such as displaying where your opponents are geographically located and a smart friend system (by Wii standards at least) that shows whenever one of your buds is online.
It’s a game that I can turn on and be in a lag-free race within a minute, hassle-free (in my experience of course).

The last time there was a thread like this, I posted mine, but nobody added me. :’( Maybe it was because I admitted that I’m not very good.
