Yes, I am a newbie. Yes, I have a goddamned big mouth. But I am no troll, and have been around the block a bit as far as discussion groups go. I still have to ask a stupid question, though. In the three days I have been here, I have come across maybe a dozen references to some punk named Mark Serlin. Hell, one jackass practically accused me of being one of his multiple identities.
So who is Mark Serlin, and is there a juicy FAQ on him somewhere?

That jackass would be me. Being such a classy jackass requires focused devotion the even distribution of arrogance to all posters regardless of who they might be in reality.
Now, being the resident jackass, I’d like to make the formal request, with all evenhanded arrogance that I can muster, that you go fuck yourself.
As for your question, well, I’m sure there are others who’d enjoy giving you the information that you seek more than I would. I’m just posting to address the jackass remark.

In a nutshell, Marky Serlin is a lonely young man who likes to post inflammatory comments to get a rise out of people. He seems to be hung up on fat (being overweight and hating fat people must suck), and has some real problems with women. Many of his classic threads involve some extremely misogynistic and sexist comments. Whether he actually believes them or not is left as an exercise for the reader.

Good summary, andros. You forgot his rampant and inflammatory racist remarks, often preceeded by the disclaimer, “I’m not racist, but…”.

The biggest problem with Mark Serlin is that he created the prototype of the framework of mistrust that most dopers now operate under. Now anyone who posts a vehement agreement immediately after an opinion is expressed runs the risk of being accused of sock ventriloquism.
I, for one, keep a huge grain of salt next to my PC with his name on it. He raised being full of shit to an art form.
And he stole my sig :mad:.

Oh… and Mark Serlin was someone who definitely had a knack for writing, and for using big language, and even for bringing up a lot of support for his arguments… however, he redefined the word “egocentric”. While his posts were entertaining, he followed the philosophy of “I can do no wrong,” which pissed off a lot of people to no end.
And he was probably schizo, what with his dozens of sockies running around. Maybe he’s following in the footsteps of Phil Hendrie…?
