Mars, bitches!

I’ve seen the term “Mars, bitches!” pop up here and there on the Internet lately, especially in blogs.

Where does that come from? What, exactly, is it supposed to mean?

Apparently there’s a humorous TV show on Comedy Central, done by a man named Chapelle. In a review of the most recent season, I found this reference:

I, myself, prefer string.

If one ignores the comma, one might think it a reference to Dejah Thoris, Thuvia, Podkayne, et al.

Or it might be short for “Male dogs are from Mars, bitches from Venus!”

“Write this down: M-A-R-S. Mars, bitches.”

Heh.

To elaborate on that, the skit was called “Black Bush.” Chapelle is standing in front of a presidential podium, and reporters ask him about his approval rating since the Iraq war, and he replies “Mars, bitches!” Do a Google search of “Black Bush” and you’re bound to find a link. The skit closed with the campaign slogan:

“Vote Black Bush in 2004
Mars, bitches!
And no gays settlin’ down neither!”

Wow, that brings back memories.

I haven’t read the Martian series in years. I should pick it up again.
