Mine too. For me
But how would you know he’s a wizard if you didn’t see his magic wand?
Catfight, I recall reading somewhere a few years ago that the percentage of violent crime in the U.S. committed by women has been gradually increasing since the 1970’s (or so). One way feminism empowered women was by encouraging them to be more like men (that was my impression of it growing up in the 80s, anyway) and it’s possible that an unintended consequence of that was to encourage them to be more violent.
I remember the phenomenon of “happy slapping”, wherein gangs of girls (most commonly) would beat up on someone and video the beating for later distribution - not sure if that’s still continuing.
In any case, as with any satire, there’s probably a grain of truth in it… just look at the What Is The Most Egregiously Sexist Act You Have Ever Seen? thread and its offshoot, the “things people have called you from cars” thread… most of the offenders being male.
I’m a beam-feminist myself. We should get together for support.
I started a follow up thread that aimed to discuss some of the issues that got started, but not in a “Man are the debil!!!” way.
No more picture threads for you!
Alternatively, porno Harry Potter Hallowe’en costume for me!
I put on my robe, and wizard hat…
Specifically, the urging from parents to their sons to be unemotional and aggressive. The theme in society that a man will always be shallow, sex-obsessed and bad with children. How real men don’t bother with school, how a man is not a virgin, and the like.
I’m not saying that this is only a problem with men, or that there aren’t corresponding societal pressures on females. But the point is, from a young age, males are pressured to become unemotional, sex-obsessed and aggressive, and that would lead to increased porn usage and violent crime from men.
And why would you lump in porn with aggression? Or unemotional with either? Someone who is unemotional isn’t going to be interested in porn ( or women for that matter ), nor are they going to be aggressive. And I’d expect someone who is into porn to be less aggressive towards women because they have another outlet.
And TV Tropes is a funny site about media . . . tropes; not a serious study of mass psychology.
Just to raise my objection to this - in what way is ‘porn’ inherently harmful at all? What harm is there in viewing a naked human body? Does it become harmful if its two (or more) bodies engaged in coitus? Or is it a religious masturbation is sinful thing?
On preview: Odd to be on the same side as Der Trihs, but
Where does this assumption that women don’t view/aren’t into porn come from?
Where all assumptions come from: the glitter box.

Well, of course “women don’t view/aren’t into porn” is a blanket statement, but I thought it was pretty well established that women, on the whole, are less likely to watch porn than men. That’s changing somewhat - I think it’s pretty easy to see that younger women are more comfortable watching, making and discussing porn than their mothers were, particularly as third-wave feminism reclaims female sexuality from the second-wave “porn is evil” brand of feminism. Still, women tend to read more erotica than men do, while men tend to watch more porn than men do. I haven’t found a U.S. study on gender and pornography consumption, but this Danish study found that:
As an interesting aside, this Australian study of the relationship between porn consumption and gender attitudes found that:
Wait, who says you need to watch porn? Women seem to be pretty good at writing and reading it, if you look at Harlequin sales and slash fiction.
This has come up before, but I think we’re entering a new phase of porn consumption in that people are getting anything they can think of on demand, instantly, and from the moment they can think to look for it (and have a computer – which is increasingly the norm, even at a very young age).
(As for being called a chick, of all the animals associated with women, and there are certainly a lot, it is among the least offensive. Especially if it’s coming from that little yellow bastard.)
I absolutely agree, and I acknowledged as much in my post: “…women tend to read more erotica than men do, while men tend to watch more porn than [wo]men.” I think we just had a misunderstanding over whether “porn” was referring to all forms of pornography or just photos and videos, which is how I usually hear it used, with “erotica” used to refer to written pornography.
Agreed. What an odd place to use for cites.
:smack: Sorry! I confess I thought the post was such offensive nonsense that I skimmed the second half of it.
Seems like the SDMB has this conversation every summer. I think the theory is the kids are out of school and have time on their hands.
I’m not sure I agree, but I don’t really have another theory.
This. Why the porn hate? Porn should be encouraged for everyone. It’s hard to cause trouble with only one free hand.
You have a free hand? You need to step up your technique. May I recommend certain things with batteries?
Or as I’ve heard it put : “If men like it, it’s porn; if women like it, it’s erotica.”
