Marvel's Daredevil Anticipation Thread

I am a huge fan of Ol’ Hornhead. In fact, his is the only comic, superhero or otherwise, that I make an effort to keep up with. While the 2003 movie was a disappointment in a lot of ways, it wasn’t all bad and it was a big pleasure for me just to see that character on screen.

Anyway, flash-forward to now, and Netflix’s 13-episode Daredevil series is a month away. The full trailer dropped today. Even with two-plus minutes of footage, it’s hard to tell for sure how good it will be. Charlie Cox was not my idea of an action hero but he seems to bring a nice subdued intensity to what little we can see here. The action, though choppy, looks well done. And Vincent D’Onofrio looks like he’s going to kill it as Wilson Fisk. We see Karen Page, Foggy, Wesley, Stick — they’re making an effort to really tell Matt Murdock’s story properly, giving room for all the details to breathe.

Summary: I am really hoping it will be great, and increasingly allowing myself to think it actually will be. What do you all think?

I plan to watch, but I am about 50/50 on if it will be a good show or not. If the reviews are terrible, I will skip it.

That month has Outlander, Game of Thrones, Orphan Black, and a few other shows. Daredevil enters a very crowded market.

The only thing I don’t like is the guy playing Foggy. His look doesn’t work for me. I will be watching it though. At this point, I’ll watch anything that Marvel puts out.

Yeah, gotta admit. At this point they have a huge freight of good will from me.

I was a Marvel guy growing up, but haven’t followed the stories for decades. Does Murdock’s blindness cause him difficulties frequently – or hardly ever? He can’t read, right? Probably can’t distinguish colors? Are there other problems he has to deal with?

Murdock can read normal type with his extra-sensitive fingers, but he can’t distinguish colors, read signs, etc.

One of his biggest difficulties is, in fact, also his greatest strength: hyper-refined senses.

He can hear a pin drop…a block away. He can smell your perfume…two hours after you’ve left the room.

So…ring an alarm bell really loudly, or spill a gallon of bleach. It overloads his senses.

Update: the first reviews are in.

“It’s everything Nolan’s Batman never had time to explore, everything Arrow wants to be”
“After watching the first five episodes, I can safely say that Marvel’s Daredevil transcends the current offering of comic book shows on television, redefining the genre as we know it.”
“Daredevil is utterly fantastic and demands that you use all of your senses while watching.”
“I cannot applaud “Marvel’s Daredevil” enough.”

A consistent thread throughout the reviews is that the stuntwork is very good and Vincent D’Onofrio is amazing as Wilson Fisk.

By cracky, I am getting excited.

IO9 gives it a good review as well:

Does the tv show have Turk? I’d love to be able to stop explaining my “Turks Says Lots” t-shirt.

I loved the Starz series Spartacus, and people responsible for that show are responsible for the new Daredevil. So I’m very excited for it, and I’m glad to see it’s getting good reviews.

Turk is in the show.

So I’m assuming there’ll be a lot of nudity and gay sex then?

Two more trailers on the Netflix site, with different footage than what we’ve seen so far. I am getting giddy waiting for this show.

Watched the first couple of episodes this afternoon. Damn this show is intense and dark; it’s borderline torture-porn dark. This is a good thing. Looking forward to watching the rest.
