I haven’t seen a thread yet. Is anyone else watching? There are only 5 episodes and I have only watched the first 4, so I don’t want to discuss the final episode just yet.
I really like the Daredevil subset of the MCU and I think Vincent D’Onofrio is great as Kingpin, so I am enjoying this more than I though I would. I’m not sure all of the background material is necessary (although it may be important in Ep 5) but truthfully, the storyline is pretty thin so they may need it as filler. I like the uncle and cousin Biscuits too, if only for comic relief. Hoping for a big payoff in Ep 5.
I watched it. I won’t say anything about what Maya/Echo does, since you want no spoilers, but I thought one thin issue with the story was something that does not happen. Although she talks about becoming the ‘Queenpin’, there is never any sign of an actual plan for taking over Fisk’s organization. Maybe that is deliberate, though, signaling that Maya doesn’t really want to do it, but just thinks it’s what she ought to do in getting revenge on Fisk.
At the very least, it’s nice to see Marvel fishing for fans in waters other than Disney+. It’s time to let some of these smaller stories exist on their own without all the baggage the MCU carries.
As Marvel did with Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, the live action version of Echo does not have the same power set as the comic book version. One reason I heard for this with Ms. Marvel is because they did not want her to be too similar to what we already see Reed Richards do in the Fantastic Four movies. With Echo, I wonder if they wanted to reduce similarities to the ‘photographic reflexes’ that Taskmaster used in the Black Widow movie. (Anything you can do, I can do better.)
I’m still disappointed that Greg Davies didn’t get to play that role.
I just watched the last episode. So… is Maya a good guy or bad guy?
If she follows the comic book version’s character development arc, she is a former stooge for the Kingpin on her way to becoming a hero.
I liked the series and I liked that it was 5 episodes. It seems to me that the longer seasons have episodes where things all get bogged down while setting up a showdown for the finale. I liked the actors in it and the setting was interesting. There was a great cameo in the first ep that made me wish they could have more of. I also find it interesting that both Echo and What If…? develop a Native American hero with super powers tied to their ancestry. To be clear, I liked both characters and how they were handled, and both had distinctive personalities and powers.
Just binged it. I thought it was a mixed bag. Reminded me a fair bit of Ms. Marvel, in that the best thing going for it was the lead character (both the character and the actress), but a fair bit of the plot was a bit of a mess.
In particular, the big central action setpiece at the skating rink just made no sense at all. So these three total clods first manage to kidnap her. Then they somehow hang her upside down from the ceiling? And then she isn’t resourceful enough to outwit them and escape? And then she beats up 30 goons in a row but then is like “oops, baddie has a gun to my cousin’s head, oh well, I’m out of tricks”. Etc. Also, she had a lot of big emotional confrontations with Kingpin; and then boy acted the heck out of it; but she just never brought up her father at all? That seemed weird.
I also think it suffers in comparison to Reservation Dogs, which is similarly set in Native American Oklahoma (with a TON of actors in common, not surprisingly), and which (imho) just deals with native folklore/beliefs/guardians/life in a vastly more entertaining (and less self-conscious) way.
Overall, though, like Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk (but NOT Secret Invasion) I thought the good outweighed the bad by a fair margin, would be happy to see more of Echo.
(One thing that puzzled me: in the 1200 a.d. flashback to lacrosse, the camera was panning across the spectators, and one of them seemed to be wearing western dress. But then that was never mentioned again. Was I just confused?)
Also… were there any post-credits scenes I missed?
Well, he certainly took steps to appear as a respectable businessman in that series. But he was also arrested during it, so it will be interesting to see how that’s handled.
I think the show needed more episodes to give the drama more of a payout and to explore more ideas. And I’d also like to see more of Ms. Cox, even if it’s not in Echo.
