I wasn’t really annoyed until I flip on the evening news…and they’ve bumped the network news so our local news can bring us breaking reports on “Ohio State fans arriving in Tempe!” “drunken OSU sing-along in a bar in Tempe!” “On location reporting from a bus ride to Tempe!” not to mention*“How the new baggage screeners work at port Columbus because god forbid you should miss your freaking charter flight to Tempe!”*.
Returning ever so briefly to the OP, I too hate the way the local tv news media fixate on sporting events, and I say that as a huge Ohio sports fan. Here in Cleveland the local tv news shows have devoted their air time during the last week as follows: 1/3 Ohio State hype, 1/3 Browns-Steelers hype, 1/4 traffic and weather, 1/24 allegedly witty banter between the anchors and the reporters, and 1/24 actual news type stuff, such as for instance the impending war. Its enough to make a guy turn to C-SPAN.
Yeah…I realize that it’s still called the Big 10…but since we’re nitpicking, I wouldn’t really say that Penn State is now “park” of the Big Ten, but rather “part” of the Big Ten.
Sports interviews have always ammused me. ever notice no matter how bad a team is they never say “Hey, face it, we’re going to LOSE!” The coach or player in question always says something like “Well, we’ve had some setbacks this year, but we have a lot of talent, all we have to do is execute.” Which means If we play well, we’ll win the game." DUH!! When the game is fairly well matched, the interviewee is asked, “What do you have to do to win this game?” and he invariably says something about “executing” again. What if he say “Score more points that the other team, Howie.” Really these games aren’t quantum physics after all. Oh and last but not least interviewing the coach about to play a team that hasn’t won a game in two years, he NEVER says “Well Terry, we could beat these guys will our eyes closed”. The closest they get to that is saying “We have to be careful not to get over confident” Read, “pop in the terminator 2 tape, this games a blow-out” Why do we interview sports personalities at all? Some day I’d love to see one of these jocks answer the question “what are you going to try to do in today’s game” with a one word answer “Win”.
Gong back to the OP, as a Columbus refugee and OSU alum living in California, I was happy to see the Buckeyes pull off a win. However, I am even more happy that I don’t have to hear Cabot Rea, Dave Kaylor, et al, gabble on about it for the next 20 years. When I’m a zillionaire, I’m going to rent a plane to tow a “Get a Life” banner over Buckeye games.
