You’re right
The good old days weren’t so good.
Why haven’t we learned from that.
I bet the cop that shot the gun man did not feel good about it. He had to be stopped, that’s no doubt.
I still would not prefer to shoot a human being.
What amazed me is the whole parking lot didn’t turn into a giant gun battle. Most likely half the humans there were armed.
It could’ve been blood bath bad.
I really question the wisdom of calling a store “Mad Butcher”, a term often used for gruesome murderers. E.g., Richard Marquette who was dubbed that by newspapers and locals during the manhunt for him after his first murder. (Note that he wasn’t imprisoned very long and when he got out he resumed killing. The parole board didn’t want to notify local authorities since that might impede his “rehabilitation” so it took a while to put two and two together.)
“Family butcher” is quite common in UK business names. I don’t think the homicidal potential of the phrase really occurs to people.
Well, if I remember correctly the original sign had a crazed looking butcher with two cleavers over his head. But now it just looks like a guy.
I was thinking the same thing. Certainly they’re going to rename it now? Maybe even tear it down and rebuild it?
It’s been there a long time.
When the grocery store in my little town closed, there’s a couple of regional small franchises that came in and decided not to commit to such a tiny town. An individual tried for a few months. Then it closed for good.
When they’re gone, they’re gone. Food deserts are everywhere in the south.
But, dang it, Dollar General just keeps building stores.
It’s all we have anymore. The gas station is open sometimes, when they have gas.
I just read that the guy who attempted to assassinate FDR and got the mayor of Chicago instead was executed about a month later.
They started out as Nugent Grocery sometime in the 1950s but by the 1970s had rebranded as Mad Butcher. We had a Mad Butcher in the little Arkansas town I lived in and I asked my wife if he was crazy or just angry. She didn’t know.
It makes me think of Mad Cow Disease.
Bad news:
It made me think of:
At first I thought I had just seen this movie a few months ago but the date didn’t seem right. Instead I was thinking of another movie where Buono played a killer The Strangler.
I presume we have been spared a strangling butcher movie.
The grocery store, Mad Butcher has not reopened.
There’s no other grocery store.
The news says there’s already a problem. So so many poor people in that area.
Man, that’s gonna get desperate.
I assume the grocery store is the pharmacy and a cooling center of sorts.
They have a Walmart–and close to 60% of its sales are groceries. And you can get food at places like Family Dollar and Dollar General.
The Walmart is one of those Walmart minis. (And way out on the highway) They don’t have fresh foods to a big extent.
If the Dollar General is like the one here, the frozen food thing has been out of order about 4 months.
They can drive to Camden or the other way to Pine Bluff or Sheridan and Little Rock.
Seems a far ride for a gallon of milk if your car is crappy and out of gas. This is poor country. Believe me.
When I heard that the young mom/nurse who died while rendering aid to another victim also knew the shooter, that had me wondering if he’s somehow related to the father of her child, if not that man himself, and she was targeted. Any evidence that this was true, or that someone else was targeted?
As for the guy loading his gun at the meat counter, he sounds like an ammosexual to me.
The local news said he was from another small town and originally from New York. He was a truck driver.
He had some trouble up north bringing a gun on to a unauthorized government plant.
No other criminal behavior that they’ve found.
His name was not the same as any victim. So not a wife. Who knows?
I bet you it’s gonna either be some domestic situation or a crazy Maga-nut, if they ever know for sure.
(I don’t like that term, ammo-sexual, sounds made up and this thread isn’t about that post anyway, that guy in that grocery store was obviously a nut, tho’)
There’s already a wikipedia on the incident.
It looks like he was originally from the area (New Edinburg, AR). He was arrested on a gun charge in NY in 2011 but mostly lived his life in AR and owned a couple of businesses.
He survived the shootout with not too bad injuries so we may find out what kind of crazy he was.
The local news was less informed. Thank you. Never thought to look on Wikipedia.
