I have to agree with the anti-turtle scene crowd. I’m not sure why, but that scene just creeps me out.
Carvey is really talented, and I certainly don’t mind a “family-friendly” comedy, provided it is funny. The commercials for this one don’t give me a lot of hope.
I’ve wanted to see this since i saw the first preview for it on the 2001 a Space Tradgedy video (which was the only good thing on the video, as the leslie nielson movie was terrible). The only bad thing about the previews seem to be they are giving away all the disguises he uses in the movie, i want to be surprised when he walks out dresses as a gorilla nun or robot construction worker, not see it in the previews.
I think he’s trying to step out of Mike Myers’ shadow. From what I hear, they had a major falling out after Wayne’s World 2, Dana basically resenting being shoved into the Wacky Partner role while Mike ingratiated himself with the studio bigwigs.
That “turtle” bit, first time I saw it, made me think, “He should have taken that ‘Late Night’ gig when Letterman left…”
Murdock, I don’t think they were really offerering it to him. They just wanted to rattle Letterman by showing him how easily he could be replaced. I could be wrong, though.
Just saw this movie today. Although I generally like Dana Carvey anyway, my excuse is that I am on a sacred mission to see every movie released (in the LA area, anyway) this year, and this is one of them.
While it is pretty silly, it was humerous enough to make me laugh a few times. Not a god-awful piece of doggie-poo, but generally likeable and not that annoying at all, and if you like Dana Carvey you’ll like the movie. I was always impressed by his skills at impersonations, and this movie certainly takes full advantage of those talents.
But the reason I posted the above quote is to comment that one of the biggest running gags in the film is a “fart joke” at the expense of Brent Spiner, no less. Not that it’s a crude, lewd or otherwise rude movie, because it isn’t, but I guess a kid-friendly film has to have SOME toilet humor to have some kid credibilty.
I have to say that I’ve never found Carvey to be that funny. I hated his Bush ‘impression.’ I hated his stand-up even more. He’s just not funny. In fact, I’ve never really been able to understand why he is so popular…same with Chris Farley, Will Farrell, or Cheri O’Teri. Their popularity just completely baffles me.
So far, 51 out of 51 Rotten Tomato critics have disapproved of this movie. This means Master of Disguise has scored a whopping 0 % on the Tomatometer. It’s still early, and all the reviews aren’t in yet, but I think it’s safe to say that this isn’t exactly academy award material.
There is a lengthy article/interview with Dana in this week’s Entertainment Weekly. If you all recall, he had his own comedy/variety show in 1996, and when it failed, he moved back to the Bay area to raise his sons. Then he had an ill-fated heart surgery, in which the wrong artery was bypassed. The surgery had to be repeated to correct the error, and he had a pretty steep recovery period thereafter.
He also downplays his “falling out” with Mike Myers, stating that it was really more a competition thing which grew into a bit of a cooling of their friendship founded on georgraphical separation and Mike’s busy-ness. Penelope Spheeris, who directed the Wayne’s World movies confirms it, and states that it’s a natural state between SNL castmembers, encouraged by Lorne Michaels himself. (Stemming from the weekly competition to see whose sketches make it on the air.) Carvey says that reports that he was angered at Myers for developing one of his (Carvey’s) ideas into Dr. Evil are exaggerated.
All that said, Mr. tlw and I will be packing up the infant and heading out to a parents’ matinee to see Master of Disguise specifically to see the Turtle Club scene. Not to mention spending an afternoon seeing a flick free of swearing and violence, which will be a nice change of pace.
