"Masters of Sex" Pilot: a new show on Showtime. Spoilers expected.

“Masters of Sex” is a new show based on the sex researchers, Masters and Johnson.

I’m surprised there isn’t a thread about this yet.

SPOILERS BELOW: **************************

One reviewer I read said something like “Masters of Sex has one thing going for it – A lot of sex” and that is definitely true. But it’s also meant to be a serious series  with Michael Sheen as William Masters and Lizzy Caplan as Virginia Johnson.

I was actually pretty happy with this first episode. I thought it was pretty well acted. It set up the story line and potential conflict for future episodes pretty well. And did I mention all the sex?

SPOILER AGAIN. YOU’VE BEEN WARNED!

And the scene where Ethan slapped Virginia and she punched him back had me yelling “good for you!”.

So what did everyone else think about it?

J.

It was OK. I might watch a few to see if it gets better. If not, then it’s off the DVR series record list.

I really liked it. In a TV landscape where “quality TV” seems to have become synonymous with dreariness and and a monochromatic “gritty” feel with a few generic antiheroes (I’m looking at you, Low Winter Sun), it’s nice to see a show that, if not actually upbeat, has a bit more of a playful tone to it. I found the end of the episode especially intriguing, with Masters’s “proposition” to Virginia.

Ethan’s character development was my only real problem with the show. He seemed to go from Doctor Dork to Major Asshole too quickly, but I guess the writers felt that had to start laying the ground for conflict between him and Masters right away.

I’ll definitely keep watching.

Liked it enough to keep watching. It is well acted and if nothing else, it is definitely different.

I’ve not seen it, but they’ve been pimping it pretty hard in the pre-show stuff at the movie theater. It looks like Mad Men Discovers the Clitoris.

I liked it and I’ll keep watching it, though I didn’t know Masters and Johnson did a sex study and until I put together the Masters of Sex = Masters from Masters and Johnson (still with me) about a week before it aired I just assumed it was about the Kinsey study.

Once I realized what they were talking about and read about 3 lines of William Masters’ wiki page you can see what’s going to happen with William and Virgina (Johnson).
I know it says spoilers expected but…

IRL him and his wife divorced and he married Virgina, they stayed married for 20 years and divorced in 1991

Virginia, IRL, died just about two months ago. Too bad she never got to see it air, I assume she was involved in the production somewhat.
