Drowned.
No drugs found at scene, but a history of use. Extended hot tub sits are known to cause increased heart rate and blood pressure. Maybe he had an undiagnosed heart condition.
Apologies for all the speculation. Sad.
I was never a ‘Friends’ guy, but he also played Joe Quincy on ‘West Wing’.
I saw him interviewed about his addiction and subsequent health struggles. Utterly harrowing.
RIP, Matthew. Seems like you truly deserve it.
The L.A. Times is reporting it, too, citing “friends.”
He played Chandler, for those who know the characters but not the actors who played them. Chandler from Friends is dead.
My wife and I most remember him from his episode of Scrubs. We’ve never seen Friends.
If I was a betting man, I’d guess a relapse.
He did do a lot of hard living. Even if he didn’t have a drug related incident, drugs undoubtedly contributed to his overall health condition.
Oh man this one sucks. Friends is my “comfort food” tv. My go-to when I’ve got nothing else to watch. My 90s nostalgia fix.
The only thing that would probably hit harder is when one of the main Seinfeld cast dies.
And later starred in Aaron Sorkin’s Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.
Early reports, which I’m not entirely sure can be trusted, are saying it was a heart attack.
I didn’t really watch Friends until I was recovering from cancer surgery 5 years ago, and I was impressed with his impeccable comedic timing. Then I listened to his memoir and learned about the horrors of his addiction. I guess I’m babbling. I still can’t quite believe this news.
The sarcastic Chandler Bing is one of the most iconic sitcom characters of all time, in my opinion.
Could Matthew Perry be any better suited for the role?
As an aside, the first thing I ever saw a teenaged Matthew Perry in had him perfectly playing a boy-next-door type who’s so gosh-darn unthreatening that the sitcom dad relents and lets his daughter go out on dates.
(With the punchline being that she immediately ditches him to meet up with the guy she’s actually interested in, but who could never pass muster…)
Let’s wait until the full autopsy report is in before stating his cause of death. It may well be natural, and, for instance, a heart attack at 54 is not unusual.
RIP, Chandler.
The article I read said that he had just come from playing pickleball, had sent his assistant home or something, and then he was ultimately found in the jacuzzi. It sound for all the world like a heart related thing to me.
This is just making me feel more raw though. I’m usually not the maudlin one, but Matt Perry, Bull, Lewiston, this has been a tough week.
Perry has had some big, life-threatening conditions in the past. Not helped by hard living. Sad news.
Could he BE any more dead?
I find it especially sad as both a former Friends fan and that he was my age.
I knew about his addictions, but we recently listened to his memoir and there was a lot of shocking stuff in there. He is/was my age so this reinforces my immortality.
I do that spoken inflection occasionally. My wife thinks it is funny but I’m sure others either don’t know or think it’s dumb. I also yell pivot! when appropriate…but, that is Matthew Perry adjacent.
Yep to both.
What the hell. Christ.
This was the first thing that popped into my head when my son texted me and it made me both chuckle and sob at the same time. Man. . …
Wow, that is quite the shock.
He is in the male heart attack age group…
