Maude Is Dead

Needless to say I was on the internet within seconds registering my displeasure to people across the world…
Ok so I had a feeling something like this would happen of course, but still, I can’t help feel a little bad about the whole thing.
Partially I just feel bad for Ned…but not too much, Honestly that whole episode seemed a bit below par. (shorter than normal maybe?)
in any case, what did y’all think out there?

You’re over a half-hour late, Nu Vo. There is already a death on the Simpsons thread addressing this subject, to which I posted the following on-the-spot report:

We’ll miss ya Maude.

Recent polls revealed that some people have never been polled, until recently.

Whew! For a minute, I thought you were talking about Bea Arthur.

I too was worried about Bea! I am still waiting for a Maude reunion!

I had no idea…

This is what I get for not watching The Simpsons on a regular basis, I don’t find out about the tragedies…

I really don’t think the show has been the same since Bleeding Gums Murphy got the Great Blues Gig in the Sky…

Maude Flanders wasn’t much of a character anyway. She was basically Ned’s wife…

I don’t think she’ll be much missed, but I think Ned’s emotional response to the loss could provide some interesting plot points in the future. Maybe I’ll start watching again…

The trouble with Sir Launcelot is by the time he comes riding up, you’ve already married King Arthur.

That’s what I thought too AuntiePam…scared me sheesh! 'Specially with all the REAL celebrities that have passed on this last week!

Yup, I thought this was gonna be about Bea Arthur. Not that I’m disappointed or anything…

Well, back to the OTHER Maude. I thought the episode was a disappointment—not very funny or incisive or clever or much of anything, really. I’m afraid maybe the show has indeed passed its peak . . .

And why the hell is Fox doing its utmost to kill off Futurama? First it’s off the air for a month, now it’s on at 7:00, with next to no promotion . . . What’s the deal with them?

I’ve been wondering what happened to the show. Was it any good last night?

Another show I want to know what happened to is The PJ’s?

You’re a good man, Charlie Brown.

Well, last night’s Futurama was a HELL of a lot better than last night’s Simpsons! Fry and Amy started dating and got head transplants, and Bender got a new ass.

I think Matt Groening and Fox have some problems with each other—seems odd that Fox would actually try to kill off a show, though, but they have totally sacrificed it to Malcolm in the Middle.

We never watch the Simpsons (nothing against, just don’t watch anything on a regular basis) and of all the moments to stop and watch it for a few minutes! We saw them shoot the shirts at Homer and then saw Maude get killed off. Weird. Especially after scanning through the thread on the board!

Well, there goes any chance for Maude to get a chance to break out of the Christian-wife mold. Never mind about the Christian wife’s needs, dreams, fears, desires; never mind if she’d like to bug out to Vegas once in a while. Her job is to clean the house, make babies, bring the sweet potato pie to the potluck, give everything and get nothing, and prop up her husband when he has doubts (which she can have, but she’ll never bother people with them.) Then, when her jerkass neighbor inadvertently causes her death, she gets a nominal couple of months before her husband finds another enabler.
I won’t say Godspeed, Maude. I will say Give 'em hell.

Remember, I’m pulling for you; we’re all in this together.

I thought the whole episode was just creepy. I watch the Simpsons to laugh my ass off. I felt real uneasy about laughing at anything in the show, last night. If I want “angst” and “tragicomedy” I don’t look to the Simpsons for it.

In fairness, Maude was a nothing character, whose whole personality and outlook is duplicated by a surviving character (Mrs. Lovejoy). But Ned sure isn’t a nothing character and I find it disturbing that they would put a major character like him through an event that we the viewers can only relate to our worst personal experience.

I was touched when Bleeding Gums died. I laughed when Frank Grimes died and Milhouse’s dad lost his hand. I almost died laughing when Bart visited ecological ruin on Austrailia. But seeing a guy like Ned lose his wife…just creepy.

I must be the only person around here who feels this way, but I thought last night’s episode was great. I was laughing hysterically at Homer’s bull’s-eye belly when the tragedy occured. I went right from slapping my knee to having big fat old tears running down my face. Poor Maude. I feel bad for Ned too. But it looks like he already has a new love interest, the Christian rock singer.

What the hell do I know, though? I still get all misty when I see the episode where Bleeding Gums Murphy dies, and I must have seen it 10 times already.

Somehow I find myself more attached to the Simpsons characters than “real” characters on other shows. Maybe I don’t watch enough TV.

I AM relieved that it wasn’t Troy MClure, though.

Careful with that axe, Eugene.

Troy McClure is already effectively dead.
The guy who voices Troy – Phil Hartman – was murdered last summer.

You’re a good man, Charlie Brown.

to clarify, last summer means May of 1998.

Either I haven’t been paying attention or you’re confusing Kirk with Luke Skywalker. Have an episode name/code for that one?

I think it was a sight gag in the episode where Homer buys Snake’s car. Someone strings piano wire across a road. Kirk drives by and waves at someone and gets his hand cut off.

The character is retired, not dead. Trot McClure will live forever!

Under an assumed name of “Trot” apparently. Damnation.
