Reading some of your other posts I don’t think you are, I think you’re bright and well spoken but also very angry and looking for answers to extremely hard questions because you still think that there are answers.
Keep looking. Please remember that there’s usually a reason fringe movements are fringe movements and that they all ultimately revolve around extremely bitter and completely self-important self-involved people “to whom life has been discourteous” and who now wish to repay the compliment. Above all things remember that there is absolutely no such thing as an easy answer to a complex problems. And wear your seatbelt. And that every individual really does have some worth until they consciously get rid of it.

Much of this actually dates back to ultra-rightwing asshole and fanatic Charlie Daniels, including a lot of the “information” that the prosecutor and Channon’s own father specifically deny. Daniels is such a fuckhead- why does Devil Went Down to Georgia have to be such a cool-ass song?
I wish the fatass old motherfucker had the guts to just openly say nigger but he doesn’t. He also thought it was cool and got a huge ovation when he said “Better not see no gay rights marches down in Dublin, Georgia!” (or other small southern towns where he was pandering) with the clear implication that if you did you’d see violence, but bitches about “hate crimes” in this case. I love the words of one blogger (I’m paraphrasing): “How bout this Charlie- I’ll gladly lead a gay pride march in Dublin if at the exact same moment you strike up a chorus of The South’s Gonna Do it Again! in downtown Detroit.”
Nevertheless the crime was an atrocity and if those 4 men and 1 woman are guilty I’ve no doubt the murderers/rapists will be put to death and I have no sympathy for them. If my own son was engaged in such an act I’d kill him myself before I’d see him go free. And it’s true- this should be bigger news than Anna Nicole, and the press does sometimes walk on eggshells for political correctness reasons where minorities are concerned, but I think the main reason this wasn’t national news was because it’s such a disgusting act and of no national ratings-grabbing importance; I can guarantee you absolutely that if CNN or (liberal news giant) FOX had done a special that just been a ratings blockbuster it would have been on every fucking station in the country within the hour, and personally I’m glad it wasn’t and that has nothing to do with race and everything to do with the fact it is sickening and, while horrible to the families obviously, of no national importance. It was a horrifying and insane act and, like tornadoes and rabid dogs, those happen unpredictably and without logic or reason or lesson.
I don’t judge any black person differently because these murderers were black the same way I hope no rational black person judges me by the fact I’m a white rural Alabamian. And it’s not white liberal guilt that makes me point out that a black person killing a white victim is almost FIFTEEN TIMES MORE LIKELY to be executed than a white person killing a black victim, and anybody who kills a white person is far more likely to be executed than the murderer of a non white person (the site is arguably biased but the stats are from DoJ (though if a RICH black person killed a POOR white person he’d probably be acquitted or sentenced to life since money’s the biggest true division). Therefore it’s not really justice that the makers of that video have the problem with- it must be the media.
Well, the media’s responsibilities and how they fulfill them are a bit too long to go into for a pit thread, but it’s indisputable history that there somehow there managed to be major racial tension and mutual distrust for a full century between the Civil War and the beginning of 24/7 cable television so I don’t think the media caused it. Nor do they seem to have a motive exactly- white people have far more economic power (for not only are they richer on average than non-whites but they’re 3/4 of the population) so why would the media actively vilify whites to go after the black market (12% of the population- smaller by far than Hispanic, incidentally)? Now if you say the media in this country is largely a pandering joke, I’m inclined to agree, but last time she was seen Anna Nicole was still white and she got a helluva lot more coverage than any murder.
Personally I find the West Memphis Three murder case absolutely fascinating. It inspired a hit documentary (Paradise Lost), and excellent and extremely annotated and documented book (Devil’s Knot by Mara Leveritt) and has been championed by several famous people (most notably Henry Rollins and Margaret Cho), but I don’t recall EVER having seen this (literally a) witch trial which put 3 teenaged boys into prison- 2 for life/1 on death row- with not only a complete absence of indisputable evidence but on the testimony of an “occult expert” whose degree was bought from a mail-order university, on the testimony of 2 witnesses who later admitted they perjured themselves on orders from law enforcement, the testimony of a mentally retarded boy who was guaranteed life rather than death sentence in exchange for his testimony AND who got major key aspects of the murders provably wrong AND who was questioned for several unrecorded hours without his lawyer or his guardian (this boy had an IQ of 70) present while a baseball bat was in the room for unknown reason. Blood evidence from an erratic blood covered suspect seen in the locale on the night of the crime LOST by police bungling, with allegations that the boys were Satanic murderers substantiated to the jurors by (among other things) the fact that two listened to Metallica and read Stephen King novels. Several officials and lawyers involved with the case have lost their positions due to corruption or disbarrment and yet this (along with all of the other things mentioned above and many more (haven’t even gotten to the “really creepy stepfather”) has not been seen as the least improper, no reason at all to re-open the case or EVEN ALLOW A MAN ON DEATH ROW AN APPEAL, by the Arkansas court system. The murders were particularly brutal, like the case in the video involved sexual mutilation, and yet as I’ve mentioned above you NEVER see it on CNN or any other news network. The defendants are white, so were the victims, but the main reason: they’re not big news at the moment so they wouldn’t bring ratings, and they’re trailer park whitetrash (not to put too fine a point on it).
These three boys were all from mobile home parks in a very poor very undereducated area of the country (West Memphis, Arkansas). There’s nothing remotely glamorous about them. Two had been in trouble with the law numerous times (nothing remotely like the crimes they were convicted for, but they weren’t wonderful kids), and none came from a family that could afford a private attorney or even a defense research fund. They were interested in alternative religions and probably dilletantish occultism in a hardcore ultra-conservatively religious town. They were, in other words, FUCKED. (I don’t believe they’re innocent [though if I had to guess one way or the other I’d say innocent they were] 1/1000th as much as I believe their guilt was never proven and that they deserve a new trial- if they’re the killers then a new trial should help prove that conclusively]). But it’s a complex case involving unattractive people and the ratings obsessed media doesn’t like that. Happens all the time.
Anyway, the point is that making this about race is an exercise in extreme oversimplification and rationalization. There are HUNDREDS of issues at play as to why Paris Hilton gets more press coverage than the Christian/Newsom murders, some of which may tangentially have to do with race of the murderers but most have nothing to do with it whatever. Has Michael Jackson ever gotten a break because he’s black (Nancy Grace practically has the lethal injection chair set up for him on her show)?
And please remember this Guy: BEFORE there were ever suspects in this case, for that matter before Anna Nicole ever died, THIS CASE WAS ALREADY BEING IGNORED BY “BIG NEWS”. It just didn’t make the cut. Lots and lots of brutal murders and missing people and interesting cases happened when Natalie Holloway went missing, but she got the news coverage; same thing with Joey Buttafuoco way “back in the day”. Evelyn Nesbitt in 1906, Henry Ward Beecher a generation before that, the Harvard Murder in the 1850s- ALL OF THESE THINGS GOT MAJOR PRESS THAT WAS DENIED TO TRIALS OF REAL IMPORTANCE. It’s the nature of the beast.

If she is convicted and incarcerated, there will no doubt be a similar media storm.
