I’ve read that McDonald’s keep the same basic menu from country to country. However, menus from certain countries include items popular in that culture. For example, McDonald’s in the Philippines serve McSpagetti with chunks of tomato and hot dog. What are some of the other menu items found in different countries around the world.
Also, is hamburger served in India? I’m curious because of Hindu beliefs concerning cattle.
As far as I know the only uniquely Australian Mcdonalds item is the ‘McOz’. It’s supposed to be something like the hamburgers sold in take-aways. It’s got lettuce, onion, beetroot. Still tastes like the same old McDonalds crap to me, but I don’t like McDonalds.
I believe they serve lamb burgers in India. Or something of that nature. You might want to check out McDonalds official site at http://www.mcdonalds.com/ They have pages for different countries (nothing on India, though, at least not that I saw)
The menu varies by region in the US, too. Here in the Midwest (maybe even just in Wisconsin and Minnesota) they serve bratwurst. I’ve seen some US McD’s with pizza. At one point some New York resturants were serving veggie burgers. I think I heard once that out west they had tacos.
When I was in London last year, they had two non-U.S. items:
#1) Curry sauce for Chicken McNuggets (not bad, btw)
#2) Some horrible looking…(don’t remember the acutal name) Teriaki burger. It was a normal burger with teriaki(sp) sauce on it and a glop of sad-looking, soggy “chow mein” vegetables on it.
Locally (Colorado) they have an item that’s just weird (I don’t think it’s national: The McRib sandwich. It’s pieces of pork squooshed into a 2 inch long by 1/2 inch wide strip. Three or four of those strips are then squooshed into a flat slab (meant to mimic boneless ribs). The whole slab is then coated with a nauseatingly sweet bbq sauce, put on a bun, covered with a couple of >gag< pickles and served luke-warm.
This has been used a promotional item in Canada a few times… the first time was when the first flintstone film came out… they were selling “Rockdonald’s” T-Shirts at the same time…
For the first 2 weeks or so they were out, they sold like crazy… then they just didn’t sell at all… I can remember working an 8 hour shift near the end of the promotion and selling maybe 3 of them.
The general opinion seemed to be that they were gross… I’ve not seen them in a while… I once ate 4 of them in one go… I’ve not been able to eat them since
BTW, they don’t come with pickles here… they came with chopped onions… and I believe the sauce was on the side to add yourself… or it might have been placed on the bun… but the patties definitely were not coated in the sauce.
The best tasting promo items that came out while I worked there were both the chicken and beef fajitas… not seen them in a long time though
Unfortunately, the McRib is a seasonal delicacy here in the great Hoosier state – served with pickles. They show up on the menu several times a year “for a limited time only.” The hubby loves 'em. Ick!
I do remember getting McNuggets in New Jersey (whilst visiting grandparents) for several years before they made it to the midwest.
I have nothing to add about other countries. I’mn sorry to admit that in Rome last summer, all I was looking for was a good old Big Mac and a Coke.
When I was in Hawaii the McDonalds had McSaimin (like ramen noodles). It was really gross. But I have to say that I gotta try the McPoutine!!! It sounds heavenly!
I was on vacation in Greece, and checked out the menu of the McDonald’s there. I didn’t see anything too interesting, other than the standard Pulp Fiction-esque replacement for the Quarter Pounder. What blew my mind was that in the description under the picture, the burger was described as a “quarter-pound” of beef. Isn’t the whole point of renaming it because they use the metric system? My brain hurts.
I recall in Chgo south of the loop into the suburbs you could get biscuts and gravy (it was great) but not north of the loop or in the norther or western suburbs.
Also in the FL Keys we had Breakfast burrito I don’t know if that was a southern thing or not.
I’ve seen the McRib around here too…I won’t touch it.
I wonder if they still have 'em, but around St. Paddy’s, they had the Shamrock Shakes-a mint milkshake. Damn, those were good.
BTW, at http://www.topsecretrecipes.com you can get the recipe for McLobster.
I live on the border of Pennsylvania and New York and we have those excuses for meat called McRibs. Also got Chicken Fajita’s, Breakfast Bagels, and those Brautwursts. I didnt realize that they didnt sell those everywhere when I was at the MrDonalds by the Wappinger Bridge in NY State and asks for a Johnsonville Braut and they all just stared at me blankly…
Here in Maine McDonald’s has Lobster Rolls in season. When I lived in Villnius, Lithuania the the menu was the same as it was at home in California. Even the prices were the same with the exchange, so most of the population couldn’t afford it. The gypsy children used to come and play on the slide and swings out front and an armed guard in a black suit used to run them off. Sorry, all this brought back memories.
