I covered this Trans-Siberian Orchestra song at my church in the Christmas program Sunday night.
When I arrived they asked if I minded just running through an existing pedal board. I didn’t care since I only really needed one sound and no switching. We set it up for me, since I was the first guitar player on the bill, and I turned my guitar volume to zero.
I was on about mid-way through the program. I went up and there was nothing. I looked and the pedal board was off and all the knobs were set to zero. FRIG! I knew nothing about this board.
I flipped it on and winged it in front of 500 people. I made adjustments as I went, and I finally found my groove.
Anyway, just wanted to share. Comments/kind critiques welcome!
I’ve not heard TSO’s version of this, but it’s a lovely mash-up of two of my favorite Christmas songs.
And I think you did a great job with the tech side of things. You went with it, rather than slow down the show to make someone else fix it, and you made adjustments as needed, during parts where it wasn’t disruptive to fiddle with the volume. Made kind of a nice build in sound, actually. I’m not a guitar player/aficionado, but the song sounded great to me.
What you can’t really see is that there are about 500 people in the audience. Most were enjoying it. It was part of a Christmas program that included everything from choral to rock music. Afterwards some of the older folks said they could hae done without the loud music, but most seemed to enjoy it.
I sang U2’s “Magnificent” last year and some older folks walked out when the drums started. Oh well.
