So I saw the Trans-Syberian Orchestra last Thursday night...

Well… they were good. Not great, by any means.

One of the things that really bothered me was the whole show was one giant GLURGE. I mean, I am all about suspension of disbelief, but Holy Og, it was swimming in it. You’d listen for a while, and certain things would just slap you into attention.

However, they had a male opera singer up from the city (NY) who had a truly awesome voice. He was my favorite. His voice easily filled the huge Pepsi Arena (10,000 people + that night), and made you shiver.

There was a great electric violin which was kind of different. And I do like electric guitar.

Then there were two soloes which nearly put us to sleep. Long, and slow, and boooooring.

But this is what really spoiled the whole evening for us. We came away about 20 minutes early so we could beat the rush, as it had taken an hour to make a 15 minute trip down. And we couldn’t leave, you see, for the staff had let everybody park their cars so as to block us in, and locked all the gates. Ugh! We had to stop and wait, and wait, as more and more people came down, all blocked in. Finally when one person moved their car it was at such an angle that we couldn’t get out, and all the people who we warned earlier about the blockage wouldn’t give us a chance to go. In disgust, we left the car and walked around Albany for a while, then hit McD’s.

In summary, I wasn’t terribly impressed with the TSO, and I will never ever go to th Pepsi for a show again. Ever.

I thought they were interesting; but not worth seeing twice. Like you said, it’s syrupy-sweet gluge and quite overblown. But the mix of orchestra and electric guitars on some Christmas standards was worth the ticket price*.

  • okay it was free for me, so it was worth what I paid.

And so another young apprentice sees the light.

Okokokok.
