Media Player 11 File missing media usage rights

I had to put my mother’s hard drive in a new computer and repair Windows XP by reinstalling it (just Windows, all the other files were left in-tact).

When trying to listen to an on-line station (which uses an .asx file) that she’s listened to a thousand times before Windows Media Player 11 says it can’t play any item in the play list and when I right click I’m told that the file is missing media usage rights.

I had this problem before and found a solution, but it’s been over a year, I’ve forgotten it, and I can’t Google it to save my life.

Media Player is set to download rights automatically and I’ve installed some codecs. None of this has worked. I also tried deleting the migration file in the DRM folder, rebooting, and trying the station again but that didn’t work either.

So if anyone has any advice I’d love to hear it. Thank you.

Have you looked at this stuff?

Thanks, but that’s kind of old. The codec link has nothing for Windows XP or Media Player 11.

Is the radio station a subscription one (meaning she had to pay)? If not, it might just be a matter of missing codecs and such… did you run through all the Windows updates and Windows Media Player updates after reinstalling?

I figured it out. It’s not the media right at all. For some reason Windows doesn’t have a driver for the audio device built in to the motherboard. I just have to find the motherboard CD or download a driver from the Internet.

I’m positive that’s what it is because I’m pretty sure that was the problem last time.
