Medical and/or Psych Dopers - Save My Grade, Please? 4 Q's on Fights and Kids.

Hello everyone! I haven’t posted much but I lurk a ton and I resubscribed to post this.

I’m a freshman in a media writing class and my story is about the kids in Missouri who have been participating in fights similar to the UFC style and how physically and emotionally safe this is for them. More info here.

Since joining this class I have seen that journalism is not for me, this is my last paper of the year, it’s a significant part of my grade and I have permission to use you all as sources. This is not for a newspaper, magazine or any sort of publication; I’m simply one of 165 students in an intro class turning in a story for only my teacher to read. With that said, does anyone want to have a go at these questions?

Thank you in advance.

If you are a medical Doper of some sort:

  1. What injuries could a child sustain from a fight like this that might cause them problems for their entire life?

  2. Do you feel this can be a safe way to teach kids defense? Why or why not?

3a. If yes: What sort of padding/protective wear do you think is necessary for the chidren’s safety?

3b. If no: What other physical activities do you suggest as still rigorous but as less dangerous?
And **if you are a psychology Doper **(preferably work/have worked with kids but anyone’s answers are great!):

  1. Do you believe this is a healthy use of the energy that most children naturally have? Why or why not?

  2. What sort of emotional problems might the kids face after frequent fights, especially if their parents push them into it? (I read about a five-year-old girl who cries before she starts each match but her dad wants her to keep going.)

  3. Do you believe this is teaching self-defense and keeping kids away from gangs and off the streets?

  4. Do you believe it is encouraging them to be too aggressive?

Also I’d like to be able to quote your answers, so if you could please tell me your name, job title and state/country of residence (in a PM if you prefer) that would be wonderful!

Thanks again.

Welcome back to the SDMB. It’s good to have you here, but we do want to point you to the Registration Agreement. Especially this part:

(Bolding, mine.)

Specifically, we have don’t want the SDMB to be used for homework help:

Because of that, I’ll go ahead and close this thread.
