And I salute your noble effort to wage the battle that you yourself started. Now you should declare “MISSION ACCOMPLISHED” and be seeking an exit strategy.
DOUBLE POST, sorry
It’s not about meenie anymore, though the more I read of her on these boards, the more I think she’s a person with real mental problems. Reading the movie review for Away From Her made her "feel sick and faint and anxious for days after I read"it and thus, she feels that movies about Alzheimers should not be made at all, ever. WTF? Reading a movie review makes you sick for days? Not a person whose skills at coping with reality are very good, and helps convince me that her problems are much larger than a harmless delusion about a teenage ghost.
I don’t think she is a well person. But what can I do about it? Nothing. Doesn’t matter what I think. I can only say what I would say to anyone who told me that story in all sincerity. And making rebuttals when people make irrelevant ad hominem attacks on their opposition to draw attention away from their poor arguments, construct and light fire to straw men, or post just plain factually wrong or extremely biased claims about science and psychiatry. Because I’m bored and it’s been quite entertaining.
Definitely a motivation I can wholeheartedly support.
Sorry, missed this.
And I have not been treated in any way in the 15 years since, or in the…:thinks:…10-or-so years prior. I have a Dysthymic disorder with the associated episodes of Major Depression for a few days approximately every four years. I also have the occasional auditory hallucination but those are limited to when I’m in bed.
But Dysmethia is a mood disorder, not a psychotic disorder. You might have some mild auditory hallucinations, but it doesn’t sound like you think they’re real, and that’s what defines a psychotic break.
I know the explosions and the ones that sound like a radio tuned between stations aren’t real. I’ve also tried to carry on conversations with inanimate objects until I realize what I’m doing. But the others that sound like distinct voices? Those I’m not sure about.
I saw that one and I agree it should never have been made. Between a male lead who sounds like the husband from the Ketchup Advisory Board ads (Zzzzzzzzzzz) and a plot that is incredibly boring (human tragedy can be, and in real life is, very tedious to watch) “Away From Her,” as a movie, should not have been made.
ETA: But, like Bryan Ekers, it’s Canadian, so I guess boring should be expected. ![]()
I thought it was fantastic. De gustibus. But the very idea of a movie about Alzheimers didn’t make you sick and full of anxiety for days, did it? You wouldn’t want to ban the making of movies on that subject (but genocide and child rape are OK) because it gives you the vapors and fucks up your life for a week, would you? No, probably because you’re not a nut. I assume… maybe you should go get checked out?
I don’t think most of us are offended by that. We’re offended by you being offended at anybody having reactions other than that she should see a doctor. You’re perfectly entitled to that opinion and even to share it; you’re pitting everybody who doesn’t, or people like me who do but don’t find it necessary or desirable to express it to her. And then pretending that your concern for meenie is the only thing driving your acerbic behavior. As a Pitee in this instance (I don’t think I posted anything to that thread, but I read it & didn’t chime in suggesting medical treatment, so I guess I’m an ‘enabler’), I call bullshit.
That said, thank you for opening a Pit thread instead of hijacking the original.
Already did and am well medicated, though my reaction would’ve been the same before, too: boring and depressing, but not so depressing that it didn’t leave my head by the time I got home. But I find many (most?) women LIKE boring and depressing movies, so I’m blessed being married to one who doesn’t. Wish the old ladies at church were more like that, but that’s probably an impossible request, being old ladies at church.
The speaker after the movie, who thought it was superficial and inaccurate, is an Alzheimer’s researcher who talked about the genetics research so she was fascinating, though because we are too young to be test subjects.
However, it was better than the movie we had the next month, the Rex Harrison “Doctor Doolittle.” Even the old ladies thought it sucked.
People, especially women, can overreact to movies with a heavily emotional subject. I can remember when my stepmom first saw the nuclear war film Testament – it upset her so deeply, she spent hours carrying on about how terrible it would be if something like that were to happen (and this was during the Cold War, so it was a justifiable fear) and how she’d probably kill her newborn son so he wouldn’t have to grow up in a post-apocalyptic future. Irrational? Perhaps. But hardly crazy.
I think Adam Sandler movies shouldn’t be made. Does that make me a nutcase?
Sounds a lot like hypnagogoic hallucinations. Those are normal, and actually quite commonplace.
Hearing voices during your waking life, especially ones that comment on your actions or argue with each other, is definitely regarded as a classic sign of psychosis. It’s good that you’ve learn to deal with them, however. Out of curiosity, have your symptoms in any way improved since you’ve learned to ignore them?
Buddy, she didn’t even see the fucking movie, she got upset and sick and full of anxiety for days just from reading the review. And on that basis, wanted no movies on the subject to be made, ever. That’s an unstable person prone to overreacting, I don’t care how you want to rationalize it.
Oh, bollocks. Sometimes, when a person is confronted with emotions they’re not prepared to deal with, it makes them angry. Not angry at the subject matter itself, but angry at the mere fact that their emotions got triggered. Hence, the knee-jerk reaction to “shoot the messenger” by suggesting such movies should never be made. Of course it’s irrational…but it happens all the time.
Nobody’s denying that Meenie7 has some underlying emotional issues – she’s admitted it herself. What makes your behavior egregious is how you’re aware of this fact, and yet you call her a “nut” and an “unstable person”, behind her back no less. On top of it all, you and your ilk claim to be compassionate. Now…who do you think she’s going to listen to? The person who makes fun of her, or the person who acts friendly towards her?
Behind her back?!? What the fuck are you talking about? I’m saying it right out in the damn open. PM her a link, it’s right there for everyone to read. Calling her a nut in the CS thread would have been against forum rules, though I came as close to it as I could in that thread. Don’t be fucking obtuse.
I don’t care if she listens to me. I don’t know her. I don’t know if she’s sick, lying, trolling, or what. I’m not the one who is screaming the word “compassion” at everyone with spittle flecks flying all over the place, spouting bullshit and attacking anyone who dares to be rational and logical about a subject that obviously makes you irrational and emotional. I object to poor argumentation as displayed by you. Basically, I’m in this because I can’t stand to see your bullshit go uncontested, and like I said earlier, I’m bored enough to keep up with it.
So by all means, say something else hilariously wrongheaded, accusatory, or irrational. I got all night.
Yeah, I think so. Hard to tell because I try not to pay any attention to them.
She’s not reading this thread anymore, that counts as “behind her back” in my book. At least you admit you would say it to her face, if allowed, and you’re not backing down from making those slurs in the first place. Oooh, you can follow forum rules! I’m impressed!
Clearly, your articulate syllogisms are far more well-honed than mine. I’m learning, though, through observation and practice. Like you, I’ve given up hope of changing anybody’s mind in this argument, and for now I’m just practicing my chops. I’m not losing any sleep over this.
By the way…did you not notice the part where she said she personally knows somebody with Alzheimer’s disease? Because that’s much different than simply finding the subject “oogy.” If you’ve ever watched a relative or loved one descend into Alzheimer’s, you’d know exactly what I’m talking about.
It’s not behind her back. I don’t know if she’s reading the thread or not, she’s certainly not responding, but I’m not hiding anything. Like I said, if you’re so concerned, PM her, that would be a nice thing for you to do. What a bullshit way for you to attack me personally. Again, you have to resort to the ad hominem because you’ve got nothing of substance to say. What a prince, what a compassionate guy you are. Yeah, I follow the forum rules. That gets a rolleyes from you? What is wrong with you?
Did you not read the thread? I had two grandparents with Alzheimers. I don’t think anyone should be forbidden from making movies on a subject just because I don’t like the topic. That’s fucked up. She was far beyond oogy on the subject. But again, you can misconstrue anything, distort anything, to continue arguing with me.
I make a sarcastic remark and you take it as a personal attack?? Damn, you’re sensitive. Just so we’re clear, your ability to follow forum rules does NOT impress me. Even a gutter-level troll can do that. I am impressed, however, by your ability to weave your own ad hominem into the same breath where you accuse me of the same. Seriously, you have a real gift for it. Out of curiosity, is public speaking a major part of your career path? That’s just a guess, I’m not reading your aura or anything.
Something tells me you wouldn’t have reacted so angrily if you didn’t know about meenie’s imaginary friend.
No, I’m totally unfeeling. Get your story straight.
Oh no, I didn’t impress you? I am going to soak my pillow with tears!
Where? What are you talking about? A little sarcasm back atcha is fair play, right? Or are you unable to use the same standards for me that you want used for yourself?
You don’t know me at all, so you’re just making shit up. You have no idea why I liked Away From Her, why I might find her “self-appointed censor” attitude towards ALL MOVIES about Alzheimers offensive, how I would have reacted to someone else saying it, etc. You’re just making this about me again. Shitty rhetoric.
Do you want to take this to PM? Because this back and forth is getting ridiculous to do in a public forum. It’s just mutual animosity now, nothing to do with the topic, mostly because YOU CAN’T FUCKING STAY ON THE TOPIC. The topic, in case you need a reminder, is meenie7, her enablers, and ghosts. Do you still want to talk about that? Is there anything more to say that doesn’t have to do with you insulting me or others who disagree with your nonsense, changing the subject, or constructing ever more contorted, unsupported rationalizations for absurdities? If not, then please, pack it in. This thread is now just you and me being assholes to each other in a public forum. If you want to keep that up, go right ahead. I’ll go 'round and 'round with you until a mod closes it in disgust.
