Mega Man 9 on Wii Shop right now!

Does this game use the regular controller, or do you need the Classic?

You can use the Wii Remote by itself (turned sideways like an NES controller) or you can use the Classic (I think, I haven’t actually tried because the Wiimote is perfect, but I assume you can).

Just figured out what the screws were and that there was a store last night after my playing session. I was wondering why I wasn’t finding any of those special items :smack:. I think I’ll have a lot more success when I play tonight.

Beat Galaxy Man on the first try after buying an energy tank. Only had to use one and just barely. I had him down to one or two notches of health without it but didn’t want to risk it.

So, the upside is that I can’t say the game is as absurdly hard as I thought it was, now that I know about these tanks.

The downside is, Galaxy Man seemed to be by far the easiest stage and boss in the game. The only other boss I’ve gotten to is Magma Man and he kicked my ass 4 times in a row. He’s deceptively difficult in that he’s not really hard to hit, but his attacks do massive amounts of damage on you and your attacks don’t really hurt him much.

Thanks to the Energy Tanks, I got Galaxy Man and Magma Man. I’ve also been able to get to Splash Woman, and I think I’m close to being able to get through Tornado Man’s stage…

Take on Tornado Man next. His level is difficult, but the Arm Cannon works pretty well on him. And his movement pattern isn’t as hard as Magma Man.

Once you get the level patterns down they become a lot simpler.

For the record, I’ve gotten to the last boss but I can’t beat him. So frustrating to have to turn off the console and come back and do ALLLL of the last stages again.

Anyway, the order I did the bosses was:

Galaxy Man -> Splash Woman -> Tornado Man -> Concrete Man -> Hornet Man -> Magma Man -> Jewel Man -> Plug Man

The weapons don’t correspond to work that way, but that was my order of success. Concrete Man’s stage is fairly easy once you figure out the elephants.

I’m really loving this game. This is what gaming was all about to me growing up; fast-paced, figuring out patterns and how to use them to your advantage, minimalism. Once games went 3D and slowed down and became all “theatrical” and story and graphics focused, gaming went from a favorite pastime to something I did occasionally when I couldn’t find anything else to do. I hope they make more games under the self-imposed restriction of 8 or 16-bit era technology. They don’t have to be licenses, either. Honestly, I liked Mega Man but I’m not playing this game out of nostalgia. That would last maybe 15 minutes. I’m playing it because it’s fun.

They should have a contest for who can make the best 8bit game. It would force people to be creative and make a fun game rather than one that just looks good. Plus, I’d love to see what today’s minds could coax out of that old technology.

Took out Splash Woman and Magma Man within a few minutes of each other last night.

Just took out Concrete Man with the trident thingy I got off whatshername. He was pretty easy. His stage gave me hell at first but once I figured out the elephants it turned out to be one of the easiest, and so far I think the shortest.

Unfortunately, I think I’m done with all the easy stages. Of the stages I have left - Plug, Hornet, Tornado, and Jewel - I haven’t even made it to one of their bosses yet.

That said, I’ve only been playing 20 or 30 minutes a day for a few days, so all-in-all I think I’m going to finish with a few hours playtime and it won’t have been as hard as I originally thought. I was damn good at these games as a kid and probably would’ve smoked through this, but I spent a couple hours playing every single day. I’m not doing so bad for an old schooler severely out of practice and pressed for free time.

If I could ever ^&*(ing get to him! His stage is not only among the hardest stages, but it’s got to be the longest. I keep going and going and going and eventually I miss a jump and it sets me way back. Geez. The stages I have left are tough.

I finally made it past the first stage of Wily’s Castle and then got my ass handed to me in level 2. The first level includes a bunch of those large laser cannons from Magma Man’s stage set up horizontally. It was a bitch.

The second stage brings back the Plant Clock enemy and these things that create platforms that block your way. Just plain evil.

I never swear as much as I do than when I’m playing a classic Mega Man game. Oh, Contra too.

Is Contra on the Virtual Console? If so is the Konami code intact?

The original isn’t. But Super C and Contra III are on it and they’re both exactly the same, codes and all.

Wow, so now that Super Mario RPG is on the VC, Contra has got to be the most popular game not on there, without question, right?

Back to Mega Man . . . I bagged Mr. Tornado and Mr. Plug today. Plug’s stage wasn’t that hard once I figured out a few patterns, and none of the bosses are hard if you have energy tanks. Tornado’s stage was a sonofabitch, though.

I’m having trouble with the mini bosses in Jewel and Hornet. I got past the mini boss in Jewel a couple times but I still haven’t beat the clock flower thing in Hornet. How many times do I have to shoot that damn thing??

Oh, one more thing . . . I bought one of those things that distributes the weapon power-ups to whichever weapon is lowest, but it’s not working anymore. Does it only work for one stage, or until a continue, or what?

The clock flower miniboss is the most aggravating miniboss in the game for me. I hated it. It’s not that hard you just have to stay as close as you can behind the hand when the flower isn’t up, and when it comes up just shoot the hell out of it then catch up to the hand again.

As for the energy distributor, I didn’t have any problems with it but I didn’t buy it until after I beat all the 8 robot masters and went to the Wily stages.

You have to shoot it a lot. I’ve found that Splash Woman’s Trident works pretty well against it.

Jewel Man’s miniboss is the falling rock right? If you watch, after he flies back up top there a bunch of dust particles flying out of the rocks along the top. The rock where the dust stops is where the thing will fall out of during the next go round. So position yourself as far away from that spot as you can to get maximum shooting time in. Once I figured that out it was easy.

Probably. Although I’d say that Earthbound, the Final Fantasy games, Secret of Mana, Tecmo Super Bowl, NBA Jam and The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask are right up there.

Weird. I guess there is a very slight chance I forgot to save after buying it, but unlikely. I’m pretty diligent about saving.

Oooh, good point. Hard to beat NBA Jam for mainstream popularity. Everybody I knew played that game. As popular as Contra is now, I hardly knew anyone else who played it when it was new. I remember my brother and I talking about it a few times and other kids our age not knowing what it was. I actually thought it was kind of a cult game until emulators came out and that was the one game everyone wanted to download.
