Melbourne Dopefest A Blast!!

Mr Cazzle and I arrived at Young and Jackson’s just after 7, and made our way upstairs to Chloe. We got there, and paused for a moment to work out where to look next, when a waitress popped up behind us and asked if she could help us. We said “We’re here to meet people we haven’t met before”, and she said “Ahhh, under Chloe? The man with the red jacket asked me the same thing”. We took a look, and sure enough, the man with the red jacket was pld, already seated with Redboss.

We made our way over, and were given an enthusiastic greeting, and a clip on koala - always the finishing touch to any outfit - from a collection living on Redboss’s jacket. We were then seated, and preceded to enjoy a drink and a chat about life in general, the US, Tasmania and Sydney, Big Brother Australia vs. Survivor and other fascinating trivia. After some time (I didn’t have a watch), the decision was taken to move on to Brunswick Street to find a bite to eat. We walked down to the tram stop, where we were greatly entertained by a street preacher and his backing vocalist until the number 112 arrived and took us to our destination.

A stroll down Brusnwick Street afforded us a good look at some interesting characters, shops and sights, including a giant man-eating flower, a la Mario Brothers, on top of a florist, some terribly interesting clothes that pld was disappointed to see didn’t come in his size, and what seemed like 400 different places to eat, each more enticing than the next. We made our way to the Noodle Palace, a reasonably priced eatery that had a conveniently empty table, and there we enjoyed a delicious meal of noodles. The food was good, the company was great, and we talked the evening away. Mr Cazzle and pld discovered a common love of Monty Python, and we all chuckled over the Simpsons, then we discussed the pros and cons of owning your own computer. Later, the waitress started revealed that she was originally from LA, and planning on going home for Christmas. She was very chatty! We sat and talked to her for a little while, before deciding to move on for coffee and cake.

We made our way to the Provincial, where we couldn’t get a table, but Redboss bumped in to some cronies and in no time at all, we had taken over the table they had just left. Coffee all round and some delicious desserts, before we knew it, it was nearly 11 and time to head back into the heart of Melbourne - pld had an early flight, and Mr Cazzle and I faced a 90 minute drive home. We caught the tram back, and parted company.

I feel safe in saying that a wonderful time was had by all. It was a great night, and I hope we can do it again some day soon!

Didn’t take many pics (having too good a time to remember camera :)), but will endeavour to get them online ASAP.

Wish I could have made it. Dopefest had slipped my silly little mind until Redboss’ email on Thursday and by the time I was otherwise engaged. :frowning:

Sign me up for the next Melbourne Dopefest though - I’ll have the date and time tattooed into my arm.

Glad you had a good time. pld sure seemed like a nice bloke, and was very tolerant of us weird Sydneysiders taking him to a Dopefest at a boring suburban pub. Young & Jacksons would probably be a better deal, on reflection.

Cazzle, let me know if you would like me to host those photos on the Dopers Downunder site. It’s my way of atoning for not taking any pictures [sub](and for that Japanese auction business)[/sub] at the Sydney Dopefest. I took my digicam with me and everything, but I didn’t feel like breaking the conversation, and the beer was too good. In any event, pld himself had a camera sitting unused on the table. Probably a good thing really; we weren’t the most photogenic of crews.

Glad the real dopefest went well. The super mini-version of the fest (with just me and Redboss) was good fun - and I got headspins from all the caffeine ;).

I can’t wait to see the photos, although the world can probably do without the ones with me in them …

Me too.

The curtainraiser with HenrySpencer was excellent - we seem to share a lot of the same prejudices - sorry, I meant to to say - he is an extremely intelligent man.

This was Henry’s first Real Life meeting with a cyberpal. He has a more interesting one coming up next month with a nice-sounding stateside gal. So keep your fingers crossed please, on his behalf.

Meeting Mr and Mrs Cazzle and pld was excellent. We had many things to laugh over, and Cazzle made with many amusing wisecracks.

For example, as I made a big deal of presenting everyone with their free gifts of a clinging marsupial in a jacket reading “I [heart] Australia”, she said “Nothing says Welcome To Australia like a clip-on koala made in China, does it?”

She is the kind of girl that might give Jane Austen a run for her money if she made up her mind to.

Also she and Mr Cazzle met ** on the net!!!** Good omen, huh?

pld was very good company, and shared some fascinating stories. Monty python - yes. I thought I knew the series well, but obviously not as well as those two guys did. I was thoroughly whooshed.

We were a fairly abstemious bunch, so there were not actually any drunken passages or midnight spa-bathing or any of the things that seem to be traditional at Other Dopefests.

Still, we had a good time in our Nice Melbourne Way. I’ll send photos when developed - from an “analogue camera”, as Mr C called it - to Loaded for mounting. Or perhaps just sitting side by side.
Kayeby, tavalla, Hawthorne, mersavets, Mats K, GuanoLad - your clip-on koalas will be kept in storage for you.

Redkoala

Hang onto that koala, Redboss - I’ll be there to claim it one of these days…about ten minutes after I win ten million in lotto and no longer have to work for a living. That koala will be living the high life then, let me tell you.

Glad everyone had fun, and looking forward to seeing the photos.

Just for any US Dopers who don’t know who Chloe is, well, let’s just say she’s a very friendly gal indeed. Those Melburnians take their indoor activities very seriously indeed.

'Specially when those indoor activities involve booze and/or nekkid pictures.
