I just read Melin’s response, and frankly I don’t know what to think anymore. If (and I stress “IF”) that is all there is to the problems, it sounds like little Ed was doing some major over-reacting.
I, for one, have never thought that Melin had regained her role as a moderator. I have never read any of her posts that even hinted to me that that was the case. Ok, she dispensed some advice in ATMB. Big deal. Using that for evidence makes most of the 1000+ posters guilty, as well as several other newer ones. I think she may have made a mistake in specifying why “the” thread had been removed, but I don’t think it warrants bannishment.
As for the sig line fiasco, lighten the hell up. Calling that stuff “two-bit” is putting a ridiculously inflated value on it.
Probably what bothers me most is the mysterious spectre of “litigation”. Ed presented it as if it were a major factor, yet apparently elsewhere all that has been forgiven and forgotten. (The MFSD)
Guys (specifically Ed, Melin, and mods/admins), the problem seems to be one of lack of communication. Unless there is still more to this story, I’d say shake hands and say “Sorry, I fucked up.”

First off, yeah, it’s the Reader’s board and they can restrict its use however they please. I’d hate to try and run a board otherwise.
There has been a long running relationship between Melin and the SDMB (and staff) that has sustained a memorable bruise in the past. Reading it all through (I won’t try and recap - all I’ve seen is available to anyone who cares to look) it does seem that Melin suffered some newsgroup abuse that she would not have if everyone knew the score. Perhaps Ed did not guide his flock through it all in the most diplomatic manner possible, but he did post (as per Melin’s response on Opal’s BBS) an explanation that seemed, to me, satisfactory. I think Melin, whose posts I both generally enjoy and regard with some fatigue when the continual rag appears, overreacted (didn’t she have a sig line something like “bitch corporate lawyer” for a bit?) and made herself appear quite threatening to Ed, Tuba, et al.
What would you do?
Frankly, I think the principals to this drama are still reconcilable. It doesn’t help things along much when the laundry goes public and we get a ravers like Kelli just fanning flames for the fun of it, or not thinking it through and giving gut responses. But much goes on.

I just found out a few hours ago that one of my very best friends as well as the kindest, unselfish, ambitious, most intelligent person I have ever known, died yesterday.

He was my date to the Rolling Stones last year, he was the person who would sneak over when I wasn’t home and work, even in the hottest Utah summer heat, on the redwood deck I was having built on the back of my house, usually with screws and materials he bought himself no matter how much I begged him not too.
He was the one who would always show up on my doorstep with an armful of gifts or flowers for my birthday or just because I mentioned I had an especially hard day.
He is the one who never judged a person for who they were no matter how bad the person.
He was the one who bought hundreds of dollars worth of health herbs from me when I sold them on the side for a few months (he didn’t really want them, but he would do anything for a friend). In fact, I think he was my only customer.
He is the one who not only sold me a brand new guitar for $100.00 less his cost, but also threw in free guitar lessons for my daughter.
He is the reason I kick myself in the ass every time I think about the day I had to tell him that I didn’t want a romantic relationship. At least he found love with his new wife of less than a year. Nothing though, can take away the love I had for him as a friend.
I could go on and on about him, but my eyes are burning from the tears. There is no one who could ever hold a candle to this guy and the things he brought to the lives of others.
Ya know, it makes all this other bullshit pointless and meaningless in the big scheme of life.

Why don’t you people just 'fess up and admit that Melin was banned because you don’t like her? Neither I nor most of the posters who use this board give a damn about MFSD or your petty personal squabbles.
BTW- 99% of the value of this board is the posters. I’m grateful to * The Chicago Reader* for letting us hang out on its corner, but they can not take any credit for why we hang out here. This board would be better served by administrators and moderators who are not so thin-skinned. Somehow, Ed, Tuba, etal have decided that criticism equals ingratitude. It would be nice if the administation started asking themselves, “What’s good for the people who use this board”, rather than “What’s good for me.” If you’re going to run a service, you’d better learn to listen to the concerns of those you serve.
