I do this all the time. Plus the “hold the door open a bit so the next person can catch the door” thing. Lately, the one I have to grin and bear is the 11 to 16 year old Boy Scouts who want to take my arm and “help” me up and down the stairs. Charming, yet infuriating ;) I let them do it, because who wants to deny a child an opportunity to do a good deed?, but I am chagrined to think that they think I NEED their assistance.
Offended? I’m thrilled! I give her my nicest smile, a nod of the head and my sweetest “Thank you,” and I reciprocate by holding the inner door open for her (if it’s a vestibule). Gives me a little rush–what can I say?
Yes, except for the handful of men who only hold it for attractive women. Seen that done, too.
But I never got the concept of “men’s jobs and women’s jobs.” Jobs need to be done. We all need to go through doors. Work never cared who did it.
How silly. As my dad used to say, "I don’t hold the door open for you because of who ***YOU ***are. I hold the door open for you because of who I am. I would never be offended at someone trying to be polite or nice.
I can open my own doors, and I don’t like it when anyone holds a door open for me (unless I’m carrying a heavy load, I suppose.)
It’s key, perhaps, that for me, I’m irritated when a man goes out of his way to hold a door open for me. I’m uncomfortable when a woman does it.
I recently was on an elevator. The doors began closing as someone approached and yelled, “hold the door!”.
I quickly poked at a “door” button, but it turned out on closer inspection to be the “close door” button. Awkward!!
No woman has ever done that for me.
If it wasn’t for cites/testimonials here, I’d say that this only happens on TV or in movies, if then.
