Men go nuts without their nuts? Vasectomy increases risk of dementia

Research links vasectomy with higher dementia risk  I thought about getting it in my thirties. Glad now that I stayed intact based on this article.

I had my tripes cut yonks ago and I’m OK.

There are those who disagree and when I 'member their names I’m gonna get 'em

Oh, really?

Errr - a vasectomy is cutting and cautery of the vas deferens, which carry the sperm from testes to prostate, IIRC. How would this affect the Sertoli cells in the testes?

The link crashed when I tried to open it.

FWIW, when I got fixed, I had to sign a waiver because of a study linking higher rates of prostate cancer to vasectomized men. I pointed out to the surgeon that vasectomized men would probably be subject to more medical attention, and thus otherwise undiscovered prostate cancers would be diagnosed. The surgeon replied, “Hmm, good point” and we went ahead with the Big Snip.

This was fifteen years ago, and ia md buh-the fine.

Shodan

men that get married and have children soon forget how to speak and forget stuff all the time…

what was I sayi

I’m not surprised by that at all. I seem to recall that some people noticed the same reaction in dogs that had been neutered. Fortunately they came up with a solution…

Neuticles!

Is that dementia as in, “He’s as crazy as George III!” or dementia as in asking the same stupid question every five minutes.

Father-in-law: “So, how’s your mom and dad?”
Me: “Fine, Tony, doin’ great.”
Father-in-law: “Good, tell 'em I said hi.”
Me: “I will. what’re you watchin’, the Avs?”
Father-in-law: “Yeah, they ain’t worth a shit without Sakic. How’s your mom and dad?”

I think it’s because when the male brain has to start doing all the thinking on its own, it becomes overloaded and shorts out.

Are the sure they don’t have it backwards? Crazy men are more likely to get their nuts snipped?

I would think it would be the opposite…

astro, Cowboy8467, y’all are aware that vasectomies don’t actually do anything to your testicles, right?

And from my reading of the primary science article (yes, I looked it up) the connection is EXTREMELY sketchy. Worth following up, but not at all surprising if it comes to nothing. I think Shodan might have nailed it.

The sperm being dumped directly into your bloodstream thing is interesting. i didnt realize a vasectomy would result in that. Honestly it’s kind of oogy to contemplate. Your blood is constantly at war with your sperm.

And it’s very much an exageration. If your vas deferens isn’t sealed during the vasectomy (some doctors do, some don’t) and it doesn’t seal up after healing from the cut, the sperm would leak out into the testicular sac or other interstial spaces. While they are at large, immune cells can diffuse out of your bloodstream into the interstial spaces and attack them, if they so choose. Eventually, the sperm would degrade and probably be mopped up by macrophages or the like. At no time would sperm actually enter your bloodstream.

And the paper in question identifies a higher percentage of vasectomized males in already diagnosed patients with a particular type of dementia than in the general population. This presents two problems, (1) that the sample size they’re working with is too small, and (2) that the sample population is simply receiving better health care, and thus more diagnoses of mental health problems, than the general population. The latter is probably true - men who get vasectomies are undoubtedly wealthier and have better health coverage than those who don’t, simply by virtue of being those who can afford and arrange a vasectomy. These men are most likely diagnosed with other health problems at higher rates than the general population just because they see doctors more often. Much, much more work needs to be done to establish this kind of link with any degree of accuracy.

Holy batshit! an interbody civil war

Calm down boys, it’s one paper of less than 100 patients. Also, it’s strictly statistical. It may coincidental.

Gen. Custer: Oh I’m sorry lieutenant, it’s the celibacy of the saddle, I’ve been having muscle spasms all day. Poison from the gonads.
Lieutenant: Sir?
Gen. Custer: Gonads. It’s medical terminology. The poison rises from the gonads into the throat and seeps down into various muscles."

Senile, eh. That explains a lot. Kind of sad really, you get 'em cut off and then forget why…

I actually did not know that. Consider my ignorance on that topic officially squelched.

Let me just join mischievous in saying that when you have a vasectomy

THEY DON’T CUT OFF YOUR NUTS!

They only remove testicles on dogs and cats (and some other animals) and it’s called neutering or castration.

Best explanation.

Here, take one of these … better?

Cut off as in “They’ve cut off the supply lines, General”
