I bought a trimmer a number of years ago and just go at it with a 1/4" guard all over. I’m not going to win any beauty contests, but it is quick, cheap and effective.
3 on the sides, 4 on top.
I haven’t had a haircut in 3 or 4 years now. I really ought to go in for a trim, though.
Every 2 or 3 weeks, it all comes off with a Wahl 000000 Balding Clipper. If I feel like getting fancy, I’ll take a razor to it in the shower.
I just say “cut it the way it is, only a little shorter.”. The fancy part is I go to a place where they shampoo me first. I feel like such a metrosexual.
Sounds like a Fred Ward. Fuckin’ A, Bubba!
I take this to it once a week: http://i243.photobucket.com/albums/ff119/glorydoodle/Slim3.jpg
I tried it with a straight razor. Do not try it with a straight razor. Taking a very sharp knife to complex curves you can’t see will produce a lot of blood.
Mack,
Have you considered getting it cut progressively shorter? As in: You leave 1 inch, get used to it and see how comfortable you are with it after a while. If you are, leave 0.5 inch, get used to it and see how comfortable you are with it after a while. If you are, then 0.25 inch until you find what’s good for you.
I don’t think combovers are ever a good idea.
Self administered buzzcut or headshave. Cheap and easy. I’m a homely old geezer, a fancy haircut would be wasted on me.
Mine’s pretty basic. My barber spends maybe 15 minutes on it.
“Regulation haircut. Trim the moustache and beard, #2 on the sides, nut leave it a little longer in the middle.”
Twice a year…
Used be fancy but have now found that my request of a short back and sides, 3mm buzz on the sides and leave some length I can mess up with a bit of hair putty is golden. I get more positive feedback on this haircut than any other.
Well, I comb it straight back over the bald spot, so it’s a combover that way. It’s not a one side to the other combover. I don’t know what else to call it.

Yeah, I know. I just don’t know what else to do with it. My awesome blonde hair! Going going… :smack:
Mine is medium complicated:
Back and sides, number 3 guard. Blended/tapered with the top and front. At frequency 1/month it’s usually take 0.5-0.75 inches of the front and top.
I usually also get it dyed with a semi-permanent dye (“Men’s color camo”) to minimize but not completely eliminate the gray.
Rounded on the neck. Square-off the sideburns at above the middle of the ear. (I wish I could grow proper sideburns, but I can’t)
For styling - forming cream. Smooth the top down towards the front, then mess up (not quite spike) the bangs.
Easy-peasey.
Fusion razor every morning in the shower.
What hair?
I’ve been trying to get the cheapest possible haircut. This seems to be found in San Francisco’s Chinatown. I found a place next to my favorite dim sum joint in the Richmond District for $11. The next time I found one in Chinatown proper for $10. The last time I got it cut for $7, but I noticed one for $5. I can/t quite remember exactly where it is, but I like wandering around Chinatown and figure i’ll find it again.
I’m actually letting my hair grow out, and it’s at the looks like hell stage, but I think I’ll get it trimmed over Christmas at the $5 joint. I usually let my hair grow long every 5 years or so for the hell of it, even though it makes me look like a dirtbag. My hair doesn’t grow nearly as fast as it used to, so it kind of sucks.
On a scale of 1 to 10, probably a 2. If one is no effort at all, then I do one more, or the barest minimum of effort - shaving it off every few months, and that’s it.
Number 5 on all sides, finger-tip length on top. I’d really prefer a nicer haircut – this one actually grows out like crap. But my hair just doesn’t DO fancy. It’s too thin to shape it and too fine to do anything interesting with (when I had long hair a braid wouldn’t stay for more than 3 minutes). The 16-ish or so cowlicks don’t help (two big ones and 14 or so little ones). So between the cowlicks and the fineness of my hair, if I grow it out at all I get no-volume hair that’s insanely frizzy and sticks out everywhere. But if I have it short it’s just kind of a mop on my head, I can basically spike it or… spike it, and even then it’s so blond and thin that if you spike it you’ll see good portions of my scalp.
ETA: I’m not balding or anything, I definitely have hair, and it’s not definitely thin in the sense that a balding man would say their hair is “thinning”, my hair just kind of has one layer and no poof.
This is what I do too, apart from not having a beard.
Well, I get a wash and cut every 1-2 months or so. I used to look through the men’s magazines, tell the hairstylist what to do, even got a perm once.
Now… eh. whatever. It’s probably korean inspired, or something (I’m asian) but I can’t be arsed any more. Women get all the fun hair.
I’ve never had anything more than just have it cut. No wash, no clippers. My barber just uses scissors (of two types), a comb and a straight razor round the bottom. I don’t let him put anything on it at all. If the cut has a name I don’t know what it is, I just go in and we agree on “the usual.”
