Just curious. I really like Taylor of Old Bond Street’s sandalwood, but I’m always open to suggestions.
Taylor of Old Bond Street is nice and luxurious with a good smell and a thick creamy lather. Proraso in the tube is also good. It is an Italian cream that has menthol and eucalyptus to make your face tingle a bit. It makes your face feel really clean, but like the Taylor, the scent is a bit strong for a few minutes. I can’t recall seeing either of these available locally. However, Bath and Body sells Proraso under the CO Bigelow brand for about $10 a tube. A really accessible cream is the Van der Hagen puck that they sell at Walmart, Target, and Walgreens for a mere 2 bucks or so. I keep it in its little cup so I don’t have to use a bowl with it. It doesn’t lather up as nice, but it has shea butter and aloe vera for a smooth shave and smooth skin. Compared to the other two, it has a very subtle but nice smell. If I recall correctly, the shaving websites give it decent marks. Buy all three and rotate them according to your mood!
I also like Tabac. I had a puck that lasted like three years but then a security guard at the airport said I couldn’t bring it in my carry on, this was in Kabul. I tried to explain that it wasn’t a liquid and that I specifically travel with it because it was allowed on carry on, but alas.
What’s that stuff I can buy for about a dollar at the discount store? Oh yeah, Williams.
I suppose that is rather like admitting to have some Bud Light Lime in the fridge around beer aficionados.
ClassicShaving.com sandalwood.
Williams or Colgate, from the drugstore.
I used Williams or Colgate for years until the local stores stopped carrying it. Now I use Tabac and/or Kiss My Face.
When I used a brush, I just used Burma-Shave soap or whatever cheap soap they sell at the drug store.
Burt’s Bees Bay Rum (but it is not always available).
I use The Art of Shaving lemon “flavor.” It’s expensive ($20-30?) but I only shave ~twice a week so one jar lasts me the better part of a year. A tiny dab will lather my whole face and it smells like lemon cookies. Heck, it even tastes good!
I like the Proraso with the white label. It’s their sensitive skin product and it works much better for me than their green labeled stuff, which otherwise I really like the smell of.
There is only one … Crabtree & Evelyn’s Sandalwood shaving soap in a wooden bowl. Just beautiful.
A puck of Van der Hagen soap from Walmart costs $1.52 and lasts months. It doesn’t like to lather in the mug so much but it does lather rather nicely on your skin when applied with even a boar bristle brush (the Van der Hagen set Walmart sells). A ten pack of Wilkinson double edge blades costs $1.76 and lasts a month or so. It’s not complicated.
Taylor of Old Bond Street Almond. I love it, but I might give their Avocado a try when this jar is finished.
My brother and sister-in-law gave me a gift set of shave cream from Nancy Boy (yes, I am secure enough in my masculinity to use a product called “Nancy Boy”). It’s pretty nice, but I like the Taylor of Old Bond Street better.
Yeah, Taylor is the one that I keep going back to. I like the almond, but I wasn’t a fan of some of the others. Sandalwood is nice because the scents lasts, but its not overpowering and the jars last a long time.
I like Geo. F. Trumper shaving soap. Good foam, nice smell that doesn’t linger and clash with any aftershave or other fragrance you might choose. I like the Limes scented one, but they do sandalwood and other fragrances as well.
Taylor of Old Bond Street’s sandalwood for me.
Williams is all I’ve ever seen available. I’ll look for Taylor of Old Bond Street though. Maybe I’ll pull up next to some distinguished fellow in a Rolls Royce and ask him if he has any.
Amazon carries Taylor’s.
Second on this, and i use their standard oil which has a hint of black pepper to it.
