Mentally Handicapped Love

I was just listening to Spirit of the West’s song “Resurrection” (which never fails to make me cry), the chorus of which is the line “And beautiful was her comet”.
At the end of the lyrics a note says, ““How beautiful was her comet” is an adaptation of a line from the Marie Putman book “Mentely (sic) Handicapped Love””

I have not been able to find this book. Does anyone know it? What’s it about? Is it really “Mentely” or is it supposed to be “Mentally”? And what is the original line?

I have the book! It is written by Marie Putnam in 1981.
The original line is “Beautiful was my comet now.”
Marie said it means “i feel beautiful, like a movie star”
