This is making me pretty sad, since I used to watch the hell out of “Designing Women” weekday mornings as a kid. (Haven’t seen it in a while, and need to rewatch it.) He took what could have been a fade-in-the-backround kind of role and made the most of it. No wonder they steadily increased his profile as the show ran on.
Plus, although the movie is cheesy and his character horribly stereotyped, his portrayal of the flamboyant designer Hollywood on “Mannequin” always made me smile. Remember his polka-dotted car cover?
Oh my goodness. I’m so sorry to hear this. I loved his character on Designing Women… I loved how he always referred to his “unfortunate incarceration.” Wow, 67 is not so old (speaking as one who is 65).
I saw this in the paper this morning and thought “Again?” I could have sworn he died about five years ago. Obviously I had him confused with someone else. I didn’t watch “Designing Women” much but I knew who he was and did like him in “Dave’s World”.
He said on a cast reunion that he was once on vacation in South Africa and while walking down a street a (black) South African stopped and pointed at him and sang out “Black man, black man, where have you come from!” and that somehow it was the most validating experience of his life.
